The Social Policy Specialization allows Honours Social Development Studies students to develop a concentration of courses in social policy that will be noted on their transcript. It is designed for students with career interests in law, global governance, human rights, health, housing, environment, and public service. Open to any student in good standing completing an Honours degree in Social Development Studies.
Requirements
The Social Policy Specialization requires successful completion of a minimum of 3.5 academic course units (seven courses) with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
- at least three of:
- at least two of:
- SDS 400R, 431R, 450R, 495R, 496R, 499A, 499B
- SOC 450R
- SOCWK 450R
- Note: Students in the honours seminar, apprenticeship courses, and senior honours essay/thesis must select topics related to social policy.
- and the remaining courses from:

- HLTH 260, 410
- INDEV 302
- PHIL 216, 328
- PLAN 340, 431
- PSCI 281, 282, 334, 382, 389, 431, 439, 472
- SOC 224R
Notes:
- Honours Social Development Studies students may select only one Honours specialization.
- All courses taken towards the Social Policy Specialization as listed above will count towards the student's Social Development Studies major average. If achievement in the non-major courses causes a drop below the major average requrirements, students will normally be allowed to continue in the Social Development Studies major but without the specialization.
- Other courses may be considered as approved upon written request to, and written confirmation from, the Chair of Social Development Studies.
