A Joint Honours academic plan with Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies may be taken in combination with most Arts disciplines in which an Honours academic plan is offered or with many Honours majors in other Faculties. See the Academic Advisor for the most recent list of approved combinations.
Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative average of 75% in SMF and SMF approved courses.
Eligibility for graduation in the Joint Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:
- Appropriate Program-level requirements for the Home Faculty, including at least 20 academic course units. If the Home Faculty is Arts, see "Bachelor of Arts."
Note: In practice, depending on the number of courses required by the second discipline (i.e., overall and for the major) and the number of electives that students choose to take, more than 40 courses may be necessary for graduation.
- Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements:
- at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in SMF and SMF approved courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
- 14 required courses:
- SMF 204/PSYCH 236
- SMF 205, 206, 207, 208, 220, 230, 310, 460
- one of SMF 304, 305, 365
- one of SMF 306/PSYCH 354, SMF 307, 366
- one of SMF 317, 318, 367
- one of SMF 461, 462
- one of SMF 490, 494, 496, 498
- two additional courses from the balance of those courses above and the following SMF and SMF approved courses, including two at the 300-level or above: ANTH 261, 350, 380, 404; ARTS/FINE 260; ENGL 108E, 208C, 208E, 208N, 217; GERON/HLTH 220; HIST 108, 213, 313; ISS 350G, 350H; ITALST 111; JS 120/RS 111; PHIL 201, 202, 210J, 219J, 318J; PSYCH 235, 318; RS 150, 180, 254, 324; SMF 308, 309, 404, 406, 408; SOC 200, 206, 209, 275, 355J, 369J; SOCWK 321R; one of SOCWK 355R, 357R, 390A, 390B; WS 101
- Plan-level requirements for the second Major.

Some of the required courses have prerequisites that students are recommended to take in their first year. Consult the calendar description for each course.

Students are encouraged to discuss their electives with the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Academic Advisor.

SMF 204 and PSYCH 236 are antirequisites; students are not permitted to take both courses for credit towards their degree.

SMF 306 and PSYCH 354 are antirequisites; students are not permitted to take both courses for credit towards their degree.

No one course may fulfill more than one requirement within any Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies plan.
