Arts Academic Plans

The Diploma in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies is intended for part-time students who seek education in this field but do not wish to obtain an undergraduate degree or already hold such a degree.

The Diploma requires successful completion of at least five academic course units (ten courses) in SMF and SMF approved courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

1. five required courses:
   • SMF 204/PSYCH 236
   • SMF 206
   • one of SMF 205, 207
   • two of SMF 304, 305, SMF 306/PSYCH 354, SMF 307, 365, 366
2. five approved courses:
• one course from either of the following areas:
  • Theory: ANTH 380, 404; ARTS/FINE 260; PHIL 210J, 318J; PSYCH 318; SMF 208, 308, 309, 367; SMF 306/PSYCH 354; SOC 369J; SOCWK 321R
    OR
  • Ethics: ANTH 350; ENGL 208N; ISS 350G, 350H; JS 120/RS 111; PHIL 219J; RS 150, 254; SMF 310; SOC 355J
• four additional courses from the balance of those courses listed in Points 1 and 2 above and the following SMF and SMF approved courses: ANTH 261; ENGL 108E, 208C, 208E, 217; GERON/HLTH 220; HIST 108, 213, 313; ITALST 111; PHIL 201, 202; PSYCH 235; RS 180, 324; SMF 404, 406, 408, 460; SOC 200, 206, 209, 275; one of SOCWK 355R, 357R, 390A, 390B; WS 101

Notes:

1. Some of the required courses have prerequisites that students are recommended to take in their first year. Consult the calendar description for each course.
2. Students are encouraged to discuss their electives with the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Academic Advisor.
3. SMF 204 and PSYCH 236 are antirequisites; students are not permitted to take both courses for credit towards their degree.
4. SMF 306 and PSYCH 354 are antirequisites; students are not permitted to take both courses for credit towards their degree.
5. No one course may fulfill more than one requirement within any Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies plan.
