Upper-Year Scholarships and Awards

Faculty of Mathematics

Elie and Doris Albers Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,500, is presented annually to an undergraduate student entering second, third, or fourth year of regular or co-op Statistics. This scholarship has been established by Cathy Cotton (nee Albers), BMath '71, MMath '74 and Paul Cotton, BMath '71, MMath '74 in honour of Cathy's parents and their commitment to education.

Accenture Award

One award valued at $1,500 is given to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year Four of a Co-op Mathematics program. Selection of the recipient will be based on active participation/leadership in extracurricular activities, interest in pursuing a consulting-type career, academic achievement (minimum 75% overall average), and strong communication skills. Relevant work-term experience will also be considered. Applications should be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office during the 3B term.

Ailey Bailin Memorial Award in Actuarial Science

A $500 award, in memory of the late Ailey Bailin, is presented to a student with the highest cumulative overall average who is entering the fourth year of Honours Actuarial Science.

George Barnard Statistics Prize

This prize is awarded annually to a student completing third-year studies, and who has taken STAT 331, STAT 333, and at least one other third- or fourth-year Statistics course. It goes to the student deemed by the Statistics and Actuarial Science Department to have obtained the best results in these courses. The prize consists of one or more books in probability and statistics.

Arthur Beaumont Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in honour of the late Arthur Beaumont, Prof. Emeritus and Honorary Member of the University, to recognize his outstanding contribution to the Applied Mathematics Department. One award, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be provided to a third-year student in Applied Mathematics with Engineering Electives or in Mathematicial Physics who demonstrates academic excellence. The successful candidate will be chosen by the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies of the Applied Mathematics department.

J.A. Brzozowski Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is presented annually to a student entering fourth year of a Computer Science program. Selection is based on academic performance with emphasis on achievement in courses focusing on theoretical computer science.

CIBC Scholarships

Six scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in Co-op Computer Science or the Business Administration and Mathematics Double Degree Program (UW). Applicants must have completed three work terms, have a cumulative average of 80% or above, and have a keen interest in working within the Financial Industry. This scholarship may not be held concurrently with other major University of Waterloo scholarships. Interested students must apply by May 31.

CMA Management Accounting Student of Merit Award

This award of $500 is presented each year to a fourth-year Accounting and Financial Management student or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy student who has demonstrated academic excellence in AFM 291, AFM 341/CS 330, and AFM 481 has also demonstrated a career interest in the management accounting profession.

COGNOS Scholarships

Three scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are awarded annually to students enrolled in second year of Honours Co-op Computer Science. To be eligible, students must have an overall average of not less than 80% and must have one co-op work-term evaluation of "excellent" or "outstanding." In addition students must demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities either on-campus or in the community.

Combinatorics and Optimization Book Prize

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student of Combinatorics and Optimization.

Computational Mathematics Undergraduate Scholarships

A number of scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in full-time studies in the Computational Mathematics program. The number and value of the scholarships varies from year to year. Selection is based on academic achievement. No application is required.

Co-operators Group Ltd. Award

The Co-operators Group Ltd. Awards, valued at $750, are provided annually to an undergraduate student who has completed the second year of study in Actuarial Science and to an undergraduate student who has completed the second year of study in Environmental Engineering. Selection is based on good academic standing at the end of Year Two and demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced by involvement in extracurricular activities either at the University or within the community. Applications should be submitted during 3A (Co-op students) or the Winter term of Year Two (Regular students).

Cecil and Edna Cotton Scholarship

This scholarship has been established by Paul Cotton, BMath '71, MMath '74, and Cathy Cotton (nee Albers), BMath '71, MMath '74, in honour of Paul's parents and their commitment to education. One scholarship, valued at $1,500, is presented annually to an undergraduate student entering second, third, or fourth year of regular or co-op Computer Science.

E.T. Davies Memorial Prizes

In memory of the late Professor E.T. Davies, his colleagues in the Applied Mathematics Department offer annually two prizes of approximately $500 each. One prize is for a first-year student enrolled in Applied Mathematics. The other prize is for the third-year Applied Mathematics student who ranks first on the final examinations.

Doris Dixon Award

Each Dixon Award, valued at $1,500, is presented by the Descartes Foundation to a student in Mathematics/Business Administration who, while not receiving a Descartes Entrance Scholarship, demonstrates excellence during her/his program of undergraduate studies.

Ross Dixon Award

Each Dixon Award, valued at $1,500, is presented by the Descartes Foundation to a student in Mathematics/Business Administration who, while not receiving a Descartes Entrance Scholarship, demonstrates excellence during her/his program of undergraduate studies.

Samuel Eckler Medal in Actuarial Science

This prize was established to recognize the contribution of Samuel Eckler to the actuarial profession and is provided by Eckler Partners. The medal, which is cast in gold, is awarded each year to the outstanding graduating student in Honours Actuarial Science.

Electrohome 75th Anniversary Scholarship

Established by the Victor Company of Japan Ltd. and Kanematsu-Gosho Ltd. in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of Electrohome Ltd., one scholarship, vaued at up to $1,500, is presented to an outstanding undergraduate entering the final year of Computer Science. The award will be based on academic performance in the second-year core and a minimum of three third-year Computer Science courses. An application and a recent résumé should be submitted during the third year or 3B term.

Equitable Life Scholarship

This scholarship, valued at up to $3,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student who has completed their second year of study in Actuarial Science. The recipient will receive $750 in each of four terms beginning at the 3A level providing that an overall average of at least 80% is maintained. The scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Equitable Life of Canada and is administered by the René Descartes Foundation.

Faculty of Mathematics GVMA Scholarship

In recognition of the close relationship between the Grand Valley Mathematics Association and the Faculty of Mathematics, this scholarship will be awarded annually to an upper-year student from a high school in the GVMA region who is not on a continuing Descartes Scholarship and who is on the Dean's Honours List. Recipients receive $750 per term through to graduation.

Faculty of Mathematics Memorial Scholarship

These awards honour deceased students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the Faculty of Mathematics. Awards are made, as funds permit, to students at any level in an undergraduate plan in the Faculty of Mathematics on the basis of academic achievement. Donations have been received in memory of Dr. David Doniz and Professor Ronald G. Scoins.

Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (FCCP) (Ontario) Education Foundation Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $500, is presented annually to the student achieving the highest mark in CS 341 (Algorithms).

Fejer/Aczel Mathematics Award

Awarded wholly or in part to one or more graduate or senior undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Mathematics. The annual value will not exceed $3,200. Preference will be given to those whose specialization is functional equations, information theory, or applications of mathematics to the social or behavioural sciences. Application should be made to the René Descartes Foundation, Faculty of Mathematics.

Scott Kelsey Fevreau Memorial Award

A $500 award has been established in memory of Scott Kelsey Fevreau, a first-year Mathematics student. The award is to be presented to a second-year Honours Co-op Mathematics student, based on high academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and personal characteristics.

K.D. Fryer Gold Medal

This award is presented annually, at Fall Convocation, to a graduating Mathematics student who best exemplifies academic excellence and good citizenship. Involvement in extracurricular affairs such as athletics, cultural activities, and student government are important criteria in making the award. The medal is in honour of Kenneth D. Fryer, a professor of Mathematics since 1959. As Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies for a number of years, he served the Faculty with academic distinction and good humoured dedication until his death in 1984.

William Gartrell Award

Dr. William Gartrell received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1968 from the University of Waterloo. To commemorate his contributions to education in high school Mathematics, the Faculty has established this $1,000 award to recognize the scholastic achievements of a second- or third-year student not previously awarded a Descartes Scholarship.

iAnywhere Solutions Inc. Scholarships

Three scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in Year Two or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering, who have a strong academic record and a keen interest in software development. Interested students in 2A-3B who are continuing in their plan/program in the next academic year should submit an application by March 1st.

Dr. Leslie Klein Mathematics Scholarships

Scholarships, valued at $3,000 each, paid in instalments of $500 per term from 2A to 4B, will be awarded to two students who have established an outstanding academic record by the end of her/his first year in the Faculty of Mathematics. This fund is made possible by a donation from Dr. Leslie Klein, Ph.D., P.Eng., whose son is a graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo.

K.C. Lee Computer Science Scholarship

Established by Francis Lee, an alumnus of the University, in honour of his father K.C. Lee, one scholarship valued at $1,000 is presented annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering Year Three of Computer Science. Selection will be based on excellent academic standing and commitment to Computer Science as evidenced by related work experience and/or related special projects. An application should be submitted during 2B or the second term of Year Two.

Frank Lun Scholarship for Excellence

One scholarship, valued at $1,000 is presented annually to an outstanding fourth-year student enrolled in Computer Science or Software Engineering who has a minimum overall average of 80% and leadership abilities as demonstrated through involvement in extracurricular activities. Applications should be submitted during the 3B term.

Richard and Elizabeth Madter Mathematics Teaching Option Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $3,500, is awarded annually to the student entering the Mathematics Teaching Option program in the Faculty of Mathematics who has achieved the highest overall average. No application is required.

Manulife Scholarships

Four scholarships, valued at $4,500 each, will be awarded to outstanding undergraduate students who have completed their second year of study and are enrolled in an Actuarial Science program at the University of Waterloo. Applicants must have a cumulative average of 80% or above, and have successfully completed at least one professional examination set by the Society of Actuaries. Selection will be based on a proven ability to balance academic studies, professional examinations results, and active participation and demonstrated leadership in activities within the university or community. In addition, eligible candidates must be committed to a career in actuarial science. Interested students should apply by May 31.

Mathematics Graduation Committee (MGC) Award

Three or more awards, valued at a minimum of $500 each, will be presented annually to students entering their final year of study in an Honours Mathematics program who have contributed leadership and involvement to student life in the community while maintaining at least a 70% cumulative academic average. It is hoped that this award will encourage further leadership and involvement in the recipients' final year of study. Interested students should submit an application by February 15th each year.

W.I. Miller Scholarship

The W.I. Miller scholarship, valued at $1,500, is awarded annually to a fourth-year student in Mathematics Co-op Teaching Option who has demonstrated academic excellence and who has also displayed, during co-op teaching terms, the promise of leadership in mathematics teaching. The award is given in memory of Wilfred Isaac Miller, who, following a distinguished teaching career in Ontario schools, was an assistant to the Dean and a Lecturer, Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, from 1967 to 1974.

Munich Re Leadership Awards

Four scholarships, valued at up to $12,000 over two years, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students entering third year of the Actuarial Science program at the University of Waterloo. Applicants must have a cumulative average of 85% or above. Selection will be based on proven ability to balance academic studies and active participation and demonstrated leadership in activities within the university or community. Interested students who have completed second year should apply by May 31.

NZ/C Actuarial Science Scholarship

Two annual scholarships, valued at $1,250 each, will be given to outstanding third- or fourth-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Actuarial Science program in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Eligible candidates must demonstrate their interest in achieving their FCIA designation by having passed at least two of the professional examinations set by the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society. Additional criteria include marks achieved at the University of Waterloo and active participation and leadership in volunteer activities of a civic nature. Interested students should submit an application to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office by May 31st each year. This scholarship is funded by a graduate of the Actuarial Science program.

Friar Luca Pacioli Awards

One award, valued at $1,000, is provided annually to a Mathematics Accountancy Studies student entering Year Two. The award is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities. Applications should be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office during the 1B term.

Friar Luca Pacioli Fellowships

Two fellowships, valued at $1,500 each, are provided annually: one to a Mathematics Accountancy Studies student entering Year Three and one to a Mathematics Accountancy Studies student entering Year Four. The fellowship is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities. Each recipient will be required to provide a maximum of eight hours per week of teaching/research assistance for Faculty for one of their two terms. Selection of the term will be at the discretion of the recipient. Fellows will be allocated to faculty members based upon their requests for teaching/research assistance for a specific term. Applications should be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office during the 2B/3B terms.

Rees-Botzang Scholarship

The Rees-Botzang Scholarship, valued at $1,500, is awarded to an undergraduate student beyond Year One in the Faculty of Mathematics in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. The recipient will also have demonstrated some contribution to student life in the Faculty or in society through volunteer activities.

Senate Scholarship Mathematics Awards

Several scholarships are awarded to students who have established outstanding academic records by the end of their first or second year in the Faculty of Mathematics and who are not on continuing Descartes scholarships. Recipients receive $750 per term through graduation. These awards are supported through donations from faculty, staff, and retirees to the Senate Scholarship Fund.

Stern Cohen Accountancy Studies Scholarship

Established by Stern Cohen, Chartered Accountants, in recognition of their 30th Anniversary, one scholarship valued at $500 is presented annually to an outstanding student enrolled in Accounting and Financial Management or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy or Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy. The scholarship is based on performance in AFM 101 and an overall average of 75% or better.

Sun Life Financial Award

This $1,000 award is made to an outstanding student who is entering the third year of Honours Actuarial Science. The award will be based on academic performance and demonstrated leadership. Applications should be submitted during the 2B term by November 30 each year.

Thomas R. Suttie Memorial Scholarship

This award has been established in honour of Thomas R. Suttie who was President and Chairman of the Board of Equitable Life Insurance Company of Canada. One award, valued at a minimum of $2,500, will be made to an undergraduate student entering third year of Actuarial Science who has an above average academic standing.

John Hin Chung Tsang Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of $750 is available annually to a student entering second year of Honours Mathematics. Selection of candidates is based on academic achievement. The award has been endowed by Mrs. Pauline Tsang, through the Education Foundation of the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals of Ontario, in memory of Mr. John Hin Chung Tsang.

Mike Vangoch Memorial Award

This award, valued at $1,000, is given in memory of the late Mike Vangoch, BMath '85, a graduate of the Pure Mathematics Department. It is presented annually to an outstanding fourth-year undergraduate student in Pure Mathematics. No application is necessary.

WATCOM Scholarship in Computer Science

This scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering second year of Honours Computer Science. T he recipient will have a very strong academic record and will not have any other ongoing scholarship support. The value of the scholarship is $1,000 per term and is renewable for each of six academic terms until graduation, provided a cumulative average of 80% is maintained in Honours Computer Science.

Waterloo-Wellington Chartered Accountants Association Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,000, is presented annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year Three in Accounting and Financial Management or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy or Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy. The scholarship selection is based upon grades achieved up to the point of entry to Year Three.

R.A. Wentzell Memorial Award

An annual award of $500 is awarded to the top male and female students at the completion of second year in Applied Mathematics. The award honours the memory of Professor Wentzell, who was a valued member of the Department of Applied Mathematics for over 20 years.
