Faculty of Arts Upper-Year Scholarships
The Faculty of Arts awards scholarships of varying amounts to outstanding full- and part-time students on the basis of overall average. These scholarships are supported through donations from faculty, staff, and, retirees to the Senate Scholarship Fund.
Ambassador of Austria Book Prizes
These prizes are awarded annually to outstanding students in German language and literature.
Ambassador of France Book Prizes
These prizes are awarded annually to outstanding students in French language and literature.
Ambassador of Switzerland Book Prizes
These prizes are awarded annually to outstanding students in each of French, German, and Italian.
Anthropology Silver Medal
A silver medal is awarded annually to a third- or fourth-year Anthropology Major or Honours student who has demonstrated academic excellence.
Arts Associate Dean's Undergraduate Prize
This $200 award is presented to the Faculty of Arts student with the highest overall average in courses taken at the University of Waterloo. The recipient must be in good standing, have completed Year Two, and be continuing in a full-time undergraduate degree program.
Arts Student Union Award
One award, valued at $200, is offered by the Arts Student Union each term to an undergraduate Arts student who has been actively involved in University student affairs and who has a minimum overall average of 70% or better. Applications should be submitted at the beginning of each term.
Robin K. Banks/Pacioli Awards
One award, valued at $1,000, is provided annually to an Accounting and Financial Management student entering Year Two. The award is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities. Applications should be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office during the 1B term.
Robin K. Banks/Pacioli Fellowships
Two fellowships, valued at $1,500 each, are provided annually; one to an Accounting and Financial Management student entering Year Three and one to an Accounting and Financial Management student entering Year Four. The fellowship is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities. Each recipient will be required to provide a maximum of eight hours per week of teaching/research assistance for Faculty for one of their two terms. Selection of the term will be at the discretion of the recipient. Fellows will be allocated to faculty members based upon their requests for teaching/research assistance for a specific term. Applications should be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office during the 2B and 3B terms.
Robin K. Banks Scholarship
The Faculty of Arts presents two scholarships valued at $500 each to students entering Year Four who have achieved the highest overall average at the end of Year Three. One scholarship is provided to a full-time student in an Honours Regular or Departmental Co-op plan and one scholarship to a student in Applied Studies or Honours Arts and Business Co-op. Robin K. Banks served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1979 to 1991. His first concerns were always the quality of education offered to our students and their ability to benefit from it.
Kim Biggar Award
This award, valued at $200, is presented to the Faculty of Arts student, entering Year Two of a full-time non-professional program, with the highest overall average in courses taken at the University of Waterloo. The recipient must be in good standing, have completed Year One in Arts at Waterloo, and be continuing in Year Two of a full-time undergraduate degree program.
Geoffrey F. Butler Award
The Geoffrey F. Butler Award may be presented annually to a graduating student in the Arts Administration Specialization who has demonstrated exceptional potential in the field of arts adminstration through his or her four work-term placements in the field. The assessment will be based on both formal and informal feedback from employers as well as consistency of work-term reports. The $500 award will be made by the Arts Administration Scholarship Committee. No application is necessary.
Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery Volunteer Award
One award, valued at $100, is presented annually to a student who has shown initiative and responsible service in support of the administration of the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery.
William Chadwick Book Prize
This award is presented to the student achieving the highest grade in DRAMA 409 (Theatre Criticism).
Chalmers Awards for Bicultural Development
Awards valued at $2,000 are awarded to University of Waterloo Arts Administration students encourage attendance at a post-secondary Francophone institution in Quebec for one full-time term on a Letter of Permission. To be eligible, students must have completed a minimum of one year of university-level French or equivalent and be in good academic standing following their 2B term. Candidates will be judged on their academic standing, their commitment to the Arts Administration profession, and their potential in the field. Awards will be made upon confirmed registration at the Quebec institution. Interested students should apply to the Director of the Arts Administration Specialization program.
Chalmers Scholarships for Outstanding Academic Achievement
A limited number of scholarships, valued at $1,000 per term, are available to Arts Administration students who have completed 2B and have met the Dean of Arts Honours List requirements. Final selection will be based on the candidates' commitment to the Arts Administration profession and their potential in the field. The scholarships are awarded by the Arts Administration Scholarship Committee and may be renewed each term providing the recipient continues to meet the criteria. No application is necessary.
Classical Studies Essay Prize
The Classical Studies Essay Prize of $100 is awarded every September to the student who, in the opinion of faculty, has submitted the best essay in any course offered in Classical Studies in the previous year.
Classical Studies Prize in Greek History
A prize of $100 to be awarded annually to the Classical Studies major obtaining the highest mark in Classical Studies 251.
Classical Studies Prize in Roman History
A prize of $100 to be awarded annually to the Classical Studies major obtaining the highest mark in Classical Studies 252.
Classical Studies Scholarship For New Majors
A scholarship of $500 is awarded annually to a new major in any on-campus program in Classical Studies.
Classical Studies Scholarship For New Majors (Distance Education)
A scholarship of $100 is awarded annually to a new major in Classical Studies studying through Distance Education.
Classics Companion Prize
A prize of $100 is presented annually to the student or students who have done most for other classics students as well as for themselves to enhance their formal learning experience.
Bessie Elnora Cleary Award
A $250 prize is to be awarded annually to a Classical or Medieval Studies student going to an accredited Teacher's College based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to students applying to a Teacher's College in Ontario who intend to teach at the Primary level.
CMA Management Accounting Student of Merit Award
This award of $500 is presented each year to a fourth-year Accounting and Financial Management student or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy student who has demonstrated academic excellence in AFM 291, AFM 341/CS 330, and AFM 481 has also demonstrated a career interest in the management accounting profession.
Concordia Club Award
The Concordia Club of Kitchener/Waterloo offers a $1,000 award to a third-year, undergraduate student majoring in German. The selection of the recipient is based on a minimum overall average of 80%, demonstrated leadership as indicated by active participation in university or community extracurricular activities, and performance in German courses. Applications, including a resume and a letter describing leadership and involvement in the above-mentioned activities, should be submitted to the Undergraduate Officer, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, by January 31 each year.
Auggie Corvino Memorial Award
In memory of the late artist Auggie Corvino, his friends have established a $400 award to be presented annually to a distinguished second-year student enrolled in Fine Arts with the Studio Specialization.
Helen L. Cross Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts
This award has been established by Ted Cross to honour the memory of his late wife, Helen L. Cross. Awards are made to full-time female undergraduate students entering second-year Arts and majoring in Fine Arts. Preference will be given to female students who have a home address in Northern Ontario (defined as north of North Bay). Selection will be made by faculty in the Fine Arts Department (no application necessary). Helen was a long-time friend and supporter of the University with a natural love for the visual arts. She found much beauty and peace in her visits to many of the world's great art galleries.
Currie Scholarship
One award, valued at up to $350, is given annually to an outstanding full-time Psychology student in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo who is entering Year Three or Year Four.
Dixon Scholarships in International Trade
Established by the Ross and Doris Dixon Charitable Foundation to recognize academic excellence among students pursuing the Specialization in International Trade, several scholarships, of varying amounts, are awarded annually to outstanding students enrolled in any year of Honours Arts and Business Co-op or Applied Studies Co-op with the International Trade Specialization.
Drama and Speech Communication Senior Scholarships
Several awards, of varying amounts, are provided annually to outstanding upper-year students registered in a Major or Honours academic plan in the Department of Drama and Speech Communication.
Herbert and Raymonde Dubé Memorial Scholarship
One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded to a fourth-year student registered in French Teaching Specialization in the Department of French Studies. The recipient will be selected on the basis of high academic achievement in French along with a demonstrable contribution to French life on campus.
Andrew James Dugan Memorial Prizes
Two prizes, valued at $500 each, are presented annually; one to an undergraduate student majoring in English who submits the best essay to a 300- or 400-level Literature class and one to an undergraduate student majoring in English who submits the best written document to a 300- or 400 level Rhetoric and Professional Writing class. These awards honour the memory of local journalist and UW alumnus, Andrew James Dugan, BA '90.
J.W. Dyck Honours Scholarship
This award was established by the late J.W. Dyck, the founder of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies. Valued at $1,000, it is awarded to the student with the highest overall average entering the second or third year of a German and/or Russian/Slavic program. Students may only win the award once. Results are announced in September.
J. William and Sarah Dyck Scholarship for Russian Mennonite Studies
This scholarship provides an annual award of $1,000, or two awards valued at $500, to outstanding students who demonstrate an active academic interest in or who have produced a research paper contributing to the understanding of the Mennonite experience in Russia. The subject of the papers may be chosen from a variety of disciplines, e.g., Religion, Music, Education, History, Literature, Peace and Conflict Studies, etc., No application is required.
Fine Arts Art History Scholarship
One award, valued at $200, is presented annually to a deserving Fine Arts major who has completed, with distinction, three years of Art History studies and elects to continue in the fourth year of the Honours Art History Specialization.
Fine Arts Memorial Award

Awards are made, as funds permit, to undergraduate students enrolled in second, third, or fourth year of Fine Arts (full- or part-time) who are mature students, have an above average academic standing, and demonstrate their ability based on a portfolio presentation. Interested students should apply directly to the Fine Arts Department. If a suitable mature student is not identified, consideration will be given to all undergraduate students in Fine Arts.
Jacqueline Forster Scholarship in French Language
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually in honour of her FR 155/156 students by Jacqueline Forster, French language instructor at UW from 1976 to 1989 and recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1989. This scholarship is awarded to the most promising on-campus student in a first-year French language course who intends to specialize in French.
Phyllis Young Forsyth Senior Scholarship
An award of up to $600 is provided annually to an outstanding upper-year student registered in a Major or Honours academic plan in Classical Studies.
R.L. Fowler Greek Language Prize
A prize of $100 is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest mark in GRK 100B. To qualify for the prize the student must enrol in a further Greek course at the 200-level.
Department of French Prize
A prize of $200 is awarded annually by the Department of French to the fourth-year French major who attains the highest overall average in French.
Department of French Studies Memorial Scholarships
These awards honour deceased students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the Department of French Studies. Awards are made, as funds permit, to full-time undergraduate students at any level in French Studies in the Faculty of Arts on the basis of academic achievement. Contributions have been received in memory of Nicole Rolland and Professor Robert L. Myers.
Robert E. Gobeil Auditing Scholarship
The Robert E. Gobeil Auditing Scholarship, valued at $500, has been established by Alcan and many friends of Mr. Gobeil. Mr. Gobeil was a founding member of the University's Accounting Advisory Council. The scholarship is awarded annually to the third-year Accounting and Financial Management student who has achieved excellence in AFM 101 and AFM 201 and who does not hold another major University of Waterloo award.
S.B.P. Haag Prize in Distance Education
A prize of $100 is awarded annually to an outstanding Distance Education student who is majoring in Classical Studies.
Cathy Jane Harrison Award
This award has been established by Classical Studies in honour of Cathy Jane Harrison, BA Hons 1999, winner of the Governor General's Silver Medal. It is presented, normally on an annual basis, to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding ability in one or both of the classical languages and literatures.
Winifred Hewetson Awards in Community and World Service
One or more awards, valued at approximately $1,000 to $1,500, have been established by the Carold Institute for the Study of Citizenship in Social Change in honour of Winifred Hewetson, to assist students who complete a work term in the service of others locally, nationally, or abroad with little or no remuneration. Funds would not be used to provide any co-op salary, rather to assist students in paying their subsequent term's tuition. Preference will be given to students who have completed a work term at an organization that engages in public advocacy. Information and applications are available through the Office of the Associate Dean of Arts, Arts Special Programs.
Lynn Holmes Memorial Award
An award of $500 is presented annually to an Honours Fine Arts student who has completed, with distinction, three years of studio work and elects to continue in the fourth year.
C. D. Howe Memorial Foundation Scholarships for Excellence in International Trade
Scholarships, valued at $1,500 each, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four of the International Trade Specialization in the Faculty of Arts. Selection is based on academic achievement. This fund is made possible by a donation from the C. D. Howe Memorial Foundation to recognize Mr. Howe's remarkable contribution to Canada's economic development.
John E. Kersell Scholarships in Political Science
Two awards, valued at $300 each, are presented each year; one to the student enrolled in Year Three of Honours Political Science (Administrative Studies) who completed Year Two with the highest overall average (minimum 75%) and one to the student enrolled in Year Three of Honours Political Science who completed Year Two with the highest overall average (minimum 75%) in at least three international studies courses. No application is required. This award is sponsored by John E. Kersell, Professor Emeritus and long time faculty member in the Department of Political Science who played a role in both Administrative Studies and international studies.
Jeanne La France Scholarship
The Jeanne La France Scholarship, valued at $400, is awarded in honour of Professor Jeanne La France who taught French-Canadian literature at Waterloo from 1966 to 1979. Eligible for the award are students entering their fourth year of a degree with French as a single or joint specialization who have a minimum overall average of 83%.
Kerr Ostrander Leadership for Tomorrow Awards
Up to three awards, valued at $2,000-$2,500, will be granted to full-time students enrolled in Year Three or Four in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. Recipients will have contributed to the public good by challenging conventional wisdom and taking the path less traveled in their studies, extracurricular activities and/or community involvement. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum overall average of 75%. Application deadlines are June 15, October 15, and February 15 each year.
Bette Lock Memorial Scholarship
An award, valued at $500, is presented each year to an undergraduate student in a degree program in the Faculty of Arts who has been away from formal education for a number of years and who has achieved a high academic standing. An application is not required. This award is funded by an endowment which is generously supported by friends of the Mature Student Services Office and donations made by Lucy Pickard in memory of her sister, Bette Lock.
Isobel Mackay Upper Year Scholarships
Scholarships, valued at up to $300 each, are presented each year to undergraduate students in a degree program in the Faculty of Arts who have been away from formal education for a number of years and who have achieved a high academic standing. An application is not required. These awards honour Isobel Mackay who served as Distance Education Counsellor and Coordinator, Mature Student Services for many years. The awards are funded by an endowment which is generously supported by friends of the Mature Student Services Office.
Donald C. MacKenzie Prize in Latin
This prize of $100 is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest mark in LAT 100B, 203, or 204. To qualify for the prize the recipient must enrol in a further Latin course at the 200- or 300-level.
Manulife Financial Community and World Service Awards
Co-op students in the Faculty of Arts who complete a work-term in the service of others locally, nationally, or abroad with little or no remuneration are eligible to apply for these awards, valued up to approximately $1,500. Information and applications are available through the Office of the Associate Dean of Arts, Arts Special Programs.
McDonald's Second-Year Fine Arts Scholarship
McDonald's Restaurants of Canada has made available a scholarship with a value of approximately $200 to be awarded to a full-time Fine Arts major on the basis of performance in first-year courses and presentation of a portfolio.
J.C. McKegney Memorial Award
Two awards may be presented annually to third- or fourth-year students in the Faculty of Arts who have shown outstanding academic performance and/or extracurricular interests in the Hispanic Area: one in Peninsular Spanish Studies and one in Spanish American Studies. Applications should be submitted by February 28 each year.
Elwin N. Neuru MD Senior Latin Award
A $250 prize is to be awarded annually to the Honours Classical or Medieval Studies student obtaining the highest average in a minimum of two 300-level Latin courses in the third year of language study. To qualify, the student must continue in a 400-level Latin course.
Nancy-Lou Patterson Award for Works on Paper
In honour of Professor Nancy-Lou Patterson, the founder of the University of Waterloo Department of Fine Arts, an award of $500 plus materials is presented annually for outstanding achievement in works on paper. The award is open to all upper-year Fine Arts majors, studio option. These works on paper will be judged by the faculty near the end of the academic year. Information about application procedures will be posted in the department close to the deadline.
Political Science Prizes
Annual prizes of $100 are awarded by the Political Science Department to the third- and fourth-year majors with the highest cumulative averages in their Political Science courses taken in the previous years. There is a $150 prize for the graduate with the highest Political Science average in his or her fourth year.
Political Science Student Excellence Award
A $200 award, sponsored by the Political Science Student Association and the Political Science Department, is available annually. The award is presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to student life at the University, as well as good academic performance.
R.L. Porter Book Prize
A book prize is awarded annually to the graduating Classical Studies student displaying the greatest academic achievement.
Princess Cinema Award
The Princess Cinema Award will be presented annually to the "best all-round" Film Studies major in his/her second year of study. Selection will be based on general average, major average, Film Society participation, professors' recommendations, and the student's election to continue with the UW Film Studies program. A "Film Card," valued at $250, will be presented at the Fine Arts Awards ceremony held at the end of Winter term.
Psychology Memorial Award

Quarry Integrated Communication Inc. Co-op English Award
One award, valued at $500, is provided to a student registered in either third or fourth year of Honours Co-op English. The award recipient will have maintained a minimum overall average of B+ and will have demonstrated work-term experience in technical communication writing. During this work-term, the student will have achieved a minimum work-term evaluation of Excellent. Interested candidates must provide a copy of the related work-term evaluation along with the application form to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office no later than February 15.
SBLR LLP Award in Chartered Accountancy
An award, valued at $1,000 is awarded annually to an undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four in the School of Accountancy in the Faculty of Arts who has achieved a minimum overall average of 75%. Applicants must demonstrate their extracurricular involvement and leadership potential. Interested students should submit an application by October 15. This award is made possible by a donation from the SBLR LLP Chartered Accountants who state, “We are committed to hiring only the best and the brightest in the industry so that we can continue to provide our clients with the exception service they deserve.”
Spanish Book Prizes
In conjunction with the Spanish Embassy, four books will be awarded annually to the most deserving students in Beginning, Intermediate, Honours, and Distance Education Spanish.
Jacqui Spoth Greek Prize
A book prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in Greek 201.
Stern Cohen Accountancy Studies Scholarship
Established by Stern Cohen, Chartered Accountants, in recognition of their 30th Anniversary, one scholarship valued at $500 is presented annually to an outstanding student enrolled in Accounting and Financial Management or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy or Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy. The scholarship is based on performance in AFM 101 and an overall average of 75% or better.
Universal Electronics International Trade Travel Award
An annual award, valued at $500, is presented to a full-time, undergraduate student registered in Arts and Business Co-op, International Trade Specialization on the basis of academic achievement.
University of Waterloo Community and World Service Awards
Co-op students in the Faculty of Arts who complete a work-term in the service of others locally, nationally, or abroad with little or no remuneration are eligible to apply for these awards, valued up to approximately $1,500. Information and applications are available through the Office of the Associate Dean of Arts, Arts Special Programs.
Waterloo-Wellington Chartered Accountants Association Scholarship
One scholarship, valued at $2,000, is presented annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year Three in Accounting and Financial Management or Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy or Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy. The scholarship selection is based upon grades achieved up to the point of entry to Year Three.
Sally Weaver Award
An award has been established, commemorating the accomplishments of Professor Sally Weaver. The award, valued at up to one term's tuition, will be presented to a part- or full-time Honours Anthropology student who is invited to apply by the department as a result of high academic achievement and who exemplifies the interests and concerns of Sally Weaver. During her twenty-seven years as a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Waterloo, Sally Weaver achieved international recognition as a scholar in applied anthropology. She has a lifetime commitment to excellence in research and teaching and an abiding determination to use her knowledge to promote justice and recognition for native peoples. Candidates will be asked to write a statement outlining their commitment to Anthropology and further studies or plans related to this field.
Jake Willms Award
An annual award of $500 in honour of Jake Willms will be made to an Arts upper-year, full-time student transferring to the University of Waterloo from a Bible College. The award will be presented on the basis of academic achievement and community service.
David E. Wright Scholarship
Family and friends have established this scholarship in memory of David E. Wright to honour his role as a faculty member in the History department. Three scholarships valued at $1,500 each are awarded annually to the three undergraduate students with the highest overall average entering second, third, and fourth year in regular or co-op History in the Faculty of Arts. No application is necessary.
