Entrance Scholarships and Awards

Faculty of Arts

Arts Alumni Entrance Scholarships

Funded by donations made by alumni of the Faculty of Arts, a number of scholarships are available each year to outstanding students entering first year of Honours Arts or Honours Arts and Business (Co-op or Regular) at the University of Waterloo. These scholarships, valued at $3,000 over Years One and Two, are awarded on the basis of performance in secondary school. Renewal for Year Two requires that the student achieves an 80% overall average.

Robin K. Banks/Pacioli Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Barr Family Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,400, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Rod Barr to reflect his dedication to the University of Waterloo's School of Accounting and Finance.

Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at approximately $55,000 over four years, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Continuance of the scholarship beyond Year One is dependent on the student maintaining an 80% overall average and continued enrolment in the program. The scholarship covers the cost of the basic tuition term fee each term to a maximum of eight academic terms. No application is required.

David T. Carter Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, was established in 2003 by the friends and family of Professor David T. Carter, upon his retirement from the University of Waterloo. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program who comes from Essex County and who best reflects the extraordinary commitment and generosity to the community for which the late Professor Carter was known and respected. In 2012, friends and family of Professor Carter donated to continue this scholarship in his memory. 

Chachra Family Accounting Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Fakir and Saroj Chachra, in honour of their niece, Ruby Singh, who received her Bachelor of Arts in Chartered Accountancy and Masters of Accounting from the University of Waterloo in 2002.

Karen Cheng Memorial Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student from Hong Kong who is entering first year of Accounting and Financial Management. Selection will be based on academic excellence as well as character, initiative and community involvement. Interested students should submit an application by May 1. This award is made possible by a donation from Boris Bong in memory of his wife, Karen Cheng. Boris and Karen each earned Bachelor and Masters degrees through the School of Accounting and Finance.

Coulman-Tormasi Family Entrance Scholarship in Accounting and Finance

One scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in extracurricular and/or volunteer activities. This fund is made possible by a donation from Lisa Coulman, BA ‘88.

James Downey Entrance Scholarship in Arts

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first-year studies in the Faculty of Arts who shows an interest in pursuing a degree in English.

Edward Maitland Dunn Entrance Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $4,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. To be eligible for this award, students must have a minimum 80% average with preference being given to someone who demonstrates leadership skills, participates in extracurricular activities, including student council and/or volunteer work as well as demonstrates an interest in teaching. This fund is made possible by the generosity of alumnus Andrew Dunn, CA in recognition of his commitment to excellence at the University of Waterloo. 

eJust Systems Inc. GBDA Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,500, is provided annually to a student entering Year One of the Bachelor of Global Business and Digital Arts program. Selection will be based on academic achievement and significant demonstrated extracurricular involvement as assessed through the Admission Information Form. This fund is made possible by a donation from eJust Systems Inc.

Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (FCCP) (Ontario) Education Foundation Entrance Scholarship in Accounting

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is presented annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering the first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program in the Faculty of Arts, or the Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy program in the Faculty of Mathematics, or the Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy program in the Faculty of Science. This award is sponsored by the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (Ontario) Education Foundation.

Mary Ann Finn Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,400, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Mary Ann Finn in recognition of her dedication to the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance and the accounting profession.

David and Elizabeth Forster Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, will be awarded to outstanding first-year students entering the Accounting and Financial Management program in the Faculty of Arts or the Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy program in the Faculty of Mathematics.

Mary Gerhardstein Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of Honours Arts or Honours Arts and Business Regular at the University of Waterloo. This scholarship honours Mary Gerhardstein who served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1995 to 2001 and who taught for many years in the Department of English Language and Literature.

Penelope Glasser Memorial Scholarship in Arts

Several scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year of any program in the Faculty of Arts. This fund is made possible by a donation from the estate of Penelope Glasser (BA ’64) who had a passion for and participated in many areas of Canadian arts.

Christopher and Claire Govan Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,500 each, are awarded to students in the Accounting and Financial Management program. Selection is based on a combination of admission grades and extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

Catherine E.B. Hanna Accounting Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are named in recognition of Mrs. Hanna's support of, and interest in, accounting education. The awards are made annually to students entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program. In addition to overall academic excellence students will have attained high levels of success in humanities subjects at the high-school level.

Robert Harding Entrance Scholarship

Two scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering any accounting program, including Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy, and Computing and Financial Management. This fund is made possible by a donation from Robert Harding (BMath/Chartered Accountancy '80).

Robert Harding – President’s Scholarship

Up to ten scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering any accounting program, including Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy, and Computing and Financial Management. This fund is made possible by a donation from Robert Harding (BMath/Chartered Accountancy '80).

Bill Harvie Scholarship/Fellowship

One award, valued at $5,000 over four years, is provided to an undergraduate student entering Year One of Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy. Selection will be based on academic achievement and leadership qualities. In Years One and Two recipients will receive scholarship payments of $1,000. In Years Three and Four recipients will receive fellowship payments of $1,500 in exchange for teaching/research assistance. Continuance in Years Two, Three, and Four will be dependent on the recipient maintaining an 80% overall average.

Brian Hendley Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $3,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of any program in the Faculty of Arts (excluding Accounting and Financial Management) at the University of Waterloo. This scholarship honours Brian Hendley who served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1991 to 1999 and who continues to teach in the Department of Philosophy.

Ives Family Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,400, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Glenn Ives as a reflection of his dedication to the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance and the accounting profession.

Professor Ashok Kapur Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One in the Faculty of Arts. Preference will be given to students who have indicated an interest in pursuing studies in Political Science. This fund is made possible by donations from friends and alumni on behalf of Professor Ashok Kapur in recognition of his contributions to the University of Waterloo.

Margaret Elizabeth Keith Entrance Scholarship for the Study of the Humanities

Scholarships, valued at up to $10,000 over four years, are presented annually to one or more outstanding students entering Year One of Honours Arts or Honours Arts and Business (Co-op or Regular) at the University of Waterloo. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic performance in secondary school, and a demonstrated commitment to studies in the humanities as indicated on the admission application. Continuance of the award beyond Year One is dependent on the student maintaining an 80% overall average and continued enrolment in one of the humanities major programs in Years Two, Three, and Four.

Robert Kerr Scholarships

This fund provides for three entrance scholarships in the Faculty of Arts and one entrance scholarship that alternates annually between the School of Architecture and the School of Planning. Valued at $2,500 - $3,500 each, these scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students entering first-year studies at the University of Waterloo.

Robert Kerton Entrance Scholarship in Arts

One scholarship, valued at up to $3,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of Honours Arts or Honours Arts and Business (Co-op or Regular) at the University of Waterloo. This scholarship honours Dr. Kerton’s contribution to the Faculty as Dean of Arts from July 1999 to July 2006.

Charles Knight Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Charles Knight.

Richard L. Knight Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at $500 each, are presented to students entering Year One of Honours Arts (Regular). These scholarships have been established to recognize the contribution of Richard L. Knight to the Faculty of Arts and the University of Waterloo community.

KPMG Entrance Scholarship

Several scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering Year One of any accounting program at the University of Waterloo. Those programs include Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy, and Computing and Financial Management. This fund is made possible by donations from KPMG alumni and the KPMG Foundation.

Morley Lemon Scholarship

One scholarship, valued up to $3,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit combined with contributions and involvement in extracurricular activities. Candidates must complete the Faculty of Arts Admission Information Form.

Linamar Scholarship in Accounting and Finance

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year One in Accounting and Financial Management in the Faculty of Arts. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence and participation in volunteer activities as assessed through the Admission Information Form. In addition, the recipient may be offered a co-op employment interview with Linamar. This scholarship is made possible by a donation from Linamar Corporation. 

Lithgow Memorial Entrance Scholarships in Arts 

Several scholarships, valued at up to $1,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering full-time studies in the Faculty of Arts who show an interest in pursuing a degree in English. This fund was established in memory of Charles H. Lithgow and his son, Ian H. Lithgow, Vice-President University Affairs, University of Waterloo from 1997 to 2000. Both men valued concise, clear, and direct prose.

Merrill Lynch Scholarship of Excellence in Accountancy Studies

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy. This award was established by Merrill Lynch Canada Inc.

J. Sayer Minas Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $5,000, is awarded to an outstanding student entering Year One in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. The scholarship is valued at $2,000 in Year One and is renewable at $1,000 for three years if the student maintains an average of 80%.

Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,200, is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Arts on the basis of academic excellence (minimum 80%). Preference will be given to students who have indicated an interest in pursuing studies in Political Science. This fund is made possible by a donation from Briana Holmes in honour of Lovinski Pierre-Antoine.

NA Engineering Associates Inc. GBDA Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded annually to a student entering Year One of the Bachelor of Global Business and Digital Arts program in the Faculty of Arts on the basis of academic achievement (minimum 85% average). Preference will be given to students who reside in Perth County. This fund is made possible by a donation from NA Engineering Associates Inc.

RBC Global Business and Digital Arts Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded annually to a student entering Year One of the Bachelor of Global Business and Digital Arts program at Stratford Campus in the Faculty of Arts. Selection will be based on academic achievement and significant demonstrated extracurricular involvement as assessed through the Admission Information Form. This fund is made possible by a donation from RBC Foundation.

Mary Rosenthal Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at $500 each, are presented to top students from Wellington County entering the Faculty of Arts.

Rozee Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $1,500 each, will be awarded to outstanding students entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program.

Russell Family Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Russell family.

W.J. Schlatter Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding high school student entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program. This scholarship honours Dr. William Schlatter who, during his long career, instilled a search for knowledge and a broad interest in life in students and colleagues, many of whom now teach at Waterloo. The recipient will have demonstrated the breadth of interests beyond accounting that Dr. Schlatter values so highly. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic performance and information provided by the applicant on the Admission Information Form.

School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) Fellowships

The School of Accounting and Finance awards fellowships on an annual basis to incoming first-year Accounting and Financial Management students. Each fellowship is valued at $9,000 over four years. Winners are selected based on four criteria: personal interview, outstanding academic performance, demonstrated leadership qualities, and sustained involvement in extracurricular activities. To assess these attributes, the School of Accounting and Finance takes into consideration a student's academic performance, performance on the Accounting and Financial Management Admissions Assignment, as well as their Admission Information Form. Students keep the fellowship by maintaining an 80% average and by fulfilling volunteer, teaching, peer leading, or research assistant commitments over the four years.

Scotiabank Accounting Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering Year One of the Accounting and Financial Management program.

Muriel Shepherd Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of Honours Arts and Business Co-op. The scholarship has been established to recognize the contribution of Muriel Shepherd to the Faculty of Arts in general and Arts and Business in particular.

So Family Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management program. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities. This fund is made possible by a donation from George So and Janet Chong.

Robert J. Sproule DECA Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year One in the Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management program. Selection is based on academic achievement (minimum admission average of 85%) and participation in DECA in grade 12. This fund is made possible by a donation from School of Accounting and Finance retired faculty member Robert Sproule.

Alexander Steele Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, may be awarded annually to an outstanding first-year student who is a graduate of Orangeville District Secondary School. Preference will be given to students entering a program in the Faculty of Mathematics and to students entering the Faculty of Arts who report an interest in pursuing a degree in English. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Norman Stuart Robertson Estate in honour and memory of N.S. Robertson’s principal, the late Alexander Steel, of Orangeville District Secondary School in Ontario.

Benjie and Sonia Thomas Scholarship in Accounting and Finance

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, will be awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering Year One in Accounting and Financial Management in the Faculty of Arts. Selection to be based on demonstrated academic excellence and participation in volunteer activities as assessed through the Admission Information Form. This scholarship is made possible by School of Accounting and Finance alumnus and friend, Benjie Thomas (PhD ’98, Accounting). 

University of Waterloo Alumni@BDO Dunwoody Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of an Accounting program in the Faculties of Arts, Mathematics, or Science. This fund is made possible by donation from University of Waterloo alumni employed at BDO Dunwoody.

UW Alumni @ Ernst & Young Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of an accounting program in the Faculties of Arts or Mathematics. This fund is made possible by a donation from University of Waterloo alumni employed at Ernst & Young LLP. 

Ronald and Dorothy Webb Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering Year One in the Accounting and Financial Management program in the School of Accounting and Finance. This fund is made possible by a donation from Alan Webb, in honour of his parents, Ronald and Dorothy Webb.

Whelan Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $3,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students in the Accounting and Financial Management program. Selection is based on a combination of admission grades and extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form. Jerry and Pam Whelan have generously created this award to help attract outstanding students to the School of Accounting and Finance.
