Athletic Awards

Athletic Awards

The following awards are for student-athletes and/or for students who participate in the University of Waterloo athletics program in some capacity. Selection may be based on athletic ability or participation, and possibly on academic achievement, leadership, or financial need. Specific criteria are noted in each award description. Only athletic awards based on financial need require an application (consult the Undergraduate Awards Database on the Student Awards & Financial Aid website for application details). Recipients are selected by Athletics through consultation with coaches and Student Awards & Financial Aid. Athletic awards must comply with the award policies of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) as determined on an annual basis.

Athletic Council Student-Athlete Award

One or more awards, ranging from $500 to $1,500, have been established by the Interuniversity Athletic Council for student-athletes who are members of a varsity team. To qualify, candidates must be in good academic standing, demonstrate financial need, and have made a leadership contribution to a varsity team or the Athletic Department in general. Eligible candidates must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. Qualifying students are eligible to receive this award on more than one occasion; however, only once per calendar year. Applications should be submitted by November 1 or March 1.

Robin Banks Athletic Excellence Award

An award, valued at $1,500, is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student who is a member of the Waterloo football team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Peter Banks in loving memory of his father, Robin Banks, former Dean of Arts and long-standing supporter of the Warrior men’s football team.

Bobby Bauer Memorial Athletic Excellence Award

One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $500 each, are given annually to student-athletes who are members of the Waterloo men’s hockey team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior athletics, and contribution to the hockey program and school. This fund is made possible by an initial contribution from the Bobby Bauer Charitable Foundation Inc.

John L. Bertoia Football Excellence Award

One award, valued at $4,500, is given to a member of the varsity football team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Kevin Bertoia, brother of Warrior football head coach Chris Bertoia, in memory of their father. 

Barbad Bidarian Athletic Excellence Awards

Two awards, valued at $4,500 each, are given to members of the varsity men’s basketball team and the men’s or women’s varsity track and field teams, with preference given to students enrolled in the Faculty of Mathematics. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Waterloo alumnus Nakisa Bidarian, in memory of his brother Barbad Bidarian. Barbad, who attended Ohio State University, was a successful student and athlete with numerous interests, including a passion for basketball, track and field, music, art, and computer science. 

Allan Bush Athletic Excellence Award

An award, valued at $3,500, is provided annually to a student-athlete who is a member of the Waterloo women’s basketball team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Allan Bush.

Campus Recreation Bursary

This bursary may be awarded annually to a student, or students, who display strong leadership contribution to the Campus Recreation programs. Candidates must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. Applications should be submitted by November 1 or March 1.

Cherrey Bus Lines Athletic Excellence Awards

Two awards, valued at $4,000 each, are given to one member of any men’s varsity team and one member of any women’s varsity team. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Cherrey Bus Lines Inc. 

Coolman Family Athletics Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a female varsity athlete on any team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Jason and Jill Coolman.

Crosby Athletic Excellence Award

Two awards, valued at $1,500 each, are provided annually to student-athletes who are members of the Waterloo men’s hockey team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Cam Crosby and Mike Crosby, on behalf of Crosby Volkswagen Audi.

Coach Dagg Football Excellence Award

One award, valued at up to $4,500, is given to a member of the varsity football team, with preference to a student athlete who is enrolled in any program in the Faculty of Engineering. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, the team, and school. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus Daniel Donovan.

Ross and Doris Dixon Charitable Foundation Athletic Excellence Awards

Up to two awards are given annually to the student-athletes that are the most highly ranked, athletically, among their peers on their particular team and among all student athletes. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to their team.

Ross and Doris Dixon Student Athlete Award

One or more awards, ranging from $500 to $1,500, have been established by Ross and Doris Dixon for students who are members of a varsity team. To qualify, candidates must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Eligible candidates must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. Applications should be submitted by November 1 or March 1.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Athletic Excellence Awards

Three awards, valued at $3,000 each, are given to student athletes who are members of any women’s varsity team. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Enterprise Holdings.

Fairfax Financial Academic All-Canadian Awards

Four awards, valued at $1,000 each, are presented annually to the top two academic male and female undergraduate student-athletes. These awards are funded by a donation made possible by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited.

Fairfax Financial Athlete Leadership Scholarships

Four scholarships, valued at $4,000 each, are presented annually to four exceptional upper-year student-athletes who best display the values and mission of the interuniversity athletics program. To be eligible, candidates must be qualified student-athletes, enrolled in full-time studies in Year Three or Four of a finance or business-related program with a minimum overall academic average of 80%, and have a demonstrated interest in finance, financial services, or insurance. Applications are due by November 1. This scholarship is funded by a donation made possible by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited.

Mark Forster Memorial Award

An award, valued at up to $500, was established by friends, relatives, and classmates of Mark Cameron Forster, BSc, in recognition of his contributions to the Kinesiology and Athletics programs at the University of Waterloo. The award will be presented annually to a third- or fourth-year Kinesiology student who has achieved a minimum 75% overall average, has participated in varsity athletics, has a high level of involvement in the athletics program, and has contributed to the Kinesiology program as a Kinesiology Student Association member or through other activities. Applications must be submitted by November 1 each year.

Forum Athletic Basketball Excellence Award

Two awards, valued at $4,500 each, are given to members of the varsity men’s basketball and varsity women’s basketball teams. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team and the school, and contributions to their local community. This fund is supported by Forum Athletic Products.

Dr. Stephen Garrett Men's Basketball Athletic Excellence Awards

Awards, valued at up to $4,500, are provided annually to student-athletes who are members of the men’s varsity basketball team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Dr. H. Stephen Garrett, OD ’80.

Ron and Lydia Glover Men’s Varsity Hockey Award

An award, valued at $4,000, is provided annually to a student-athlete who is a member of the Waterloo men’s varsity hockey team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by Christopher Glover in honour of his parents Ron and Lydia Glover.  

Terry Goodenough Memorial Cross-Country Excellence Award

An award, valued at $1,000 or more, is given annually to a student-athlete who is a member of the Waterloo cross-country team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund honours the late Terry Goodenough, a beloved member of the running community who coached teams for the University of Waterloo, Laurel Creek Track Club, Toronto Olympic Club, as well as numerous national teams. Terry was a national competitor himself and an All-American athlete.

Catherine and Feridun Hamdullahpur Athletic Excellence Awards

Two awards, valued at $2,500 each, are provided annually to student athletes who are members of any women’s varsity team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Catherine and Feridun Hamdullahpur, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo.

Don Hayes Memorial Award

This award, valued at up to $500, is given annually to a deserving undergraduate student-athlete who has a minimum 75% overall average and has made a contribution to the University or community through involvement in extracurricular activities with emphasis on athletics and sport therapy.

HockeyTech Hockey Excellence Award

Four awards, valued at $4,500 each, are given to two members of the women’s and two members of the men’s varsity hockey teams. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, the team, and school. This fund is supported by the Stu and Jill Siegel Charitable Foundation. Stu is the CEO and Founder of HockeyTech, a company that provides hockey-related technologies, analytics, and information services. 

Koen Houston Athletic Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a member of any varsity team, with preference given to a current or former volunteer with the Team-Up program. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team and the school  This fund is supported by Frances Houston and Ren Walt to celebrate their son Koen’s love and passion for sport.

George Hunsberger Athletic Excellence Award

An award, valued at $1,500 is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student who is a member of the Waterloo football team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Peter Banks in honour of George Hunsberger, a former Waterloo Warrior football player and an outstanding basketball and football coach at Bluevale Collegiate in Waterloo Ontario. George has been a wonderful mentor to many current coaches and teachers in the province of Ontario.

Brian Irvine Football Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is provided to a member of the varsity football team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund was established by University of Waterloo alumnus Ian MacNaughton.

Linda Kieswetter Athletic Excellence Awards

Several awards are given annually to the student-athletes that are the most highly ranked, athletically, among their peers on their particular team and among all student athletes. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to their team and school.

Tom Kieswetter Athletic Excellence Award

One or more awards, valued at $1,000 or more, will be given to members of the varsity men’s basketball team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills.  his fund is supported by friends and family of Tom Kieswetter, to honour his tenure as the Warrior men’s basketball head coach from 1992 – 2012.

T. Litzen Sports Athletic Excellence Award

Three awards, valued at $3,000 each, are given to two female varsity athletes and one male varsity athlete. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and school. This fund is supported by T. Litzen Sports, the official outfitter of Waterloo Warrior Athletics.

Matthew Mains Swimming Excellence Awards

Two awards, valued at $1,200 each, are given to a male and female member of the varsity swimming team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus Matthew R. Mains. 

Don McCrae Athletic Bursary

One or more awards up to $3,000, have been established for students who are members of the University of Waterloo men's or women's varsity basketball team, men’s or women’s varsity volleyball team, or men’s or women’s varsity ice hockey team. To qualify, candidates must be in good academic standing, demonstrate financial need, and have made a leadership contribution to their respective team, or the Athletic Department in general. Eligible candidates must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. Qualifying students are eligible to receive this award on more than one occasion; however, only once per calendar year. Applications should be submitted by a current University of Waterloo bursary term deadline.

Judy McCrae Award of Excellence

An award, valued at up $500, may be provided to a student-athlete who is a member of a women’s varsity team at the University of Waterloo. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. The award is made possible by the support of Waterloo alumni, students, colleagues, and friends in honour of Judy McCrae’s retirement and outstanding leadership as Director of Waterloo Athletics and Recreational Services.

Brent McFarlane Track and Field Excellence Award

An award, valued at $4,000, or two awards valued at $2,000, will be given to one or two members of the varsity track and field team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills. This fund is made possible by a donation from Robert Newman to honour and recognize his friend Brent McFarlane.

Men’s Basketball Coaches Excellence Award

One award, valued at $1,000, will be given annually to a student-athlete who is a member of the Waterloo men’s basketball team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to his team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Linda Kieswetter in honour of Tom Kieswetter.

Don Mills Cross Country Award

An award is given annually to the runner that demonstrates strong running results, has made a significant contribution to the varsity team, and ranks among the best on the team.

Robert D. Moggach Athletics Scholarship

Two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, are provided annually to a male and a female student-athlete who are members of a varsity team (excluding football). These awards recognize athletic talent, academic achievement, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to their team and school. This fund is made possible through the generous support of Bradley D. Moggach (BA ’12) in honour of his father and grandfather who both hold the name Robert D. Moggach.

Mike Moser Memorial Award

This award is given annually to a student-athlete who displays exceptional athletic talent and contribution to their team as well as academic success.

Roger and Mary Moser Athletic Award

One or more awards are given annually to the student-athlete(s) that are the most highly ranked, athletically, among their peers on their particular team and among all student athletes. These awards reward athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team.

Parry – Glover Women’s Athletics Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a student athlete who is a member of any women’s varsity team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Diana Parry and Troy Glover.

Pita Pit Football Excellence Award

One award, valued at $4,500, is given to a member of the varsity football team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by the Northfield Drive, Waterloo Pita Pit and its owner, Ted Siountres.

RBC Athletic and Community Excellence Awards

Four awards, valued at $4,000 each, are given to student athletes who are members of any men’s or women’s varsity team. This award recognizes a strong commitment to community service, volunteerism, and leadership within the University and broader community. This fund is supported by RBC.

Routes Transport Group Football Athletic Excellence Awards

Four awards valued at $4,500 each and one award valued at $2,000 will be given to members of the varsity football team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills. This fund is supported by Routes Transport Group.

Savich Men’s Basketball Athletic Excellence Award

One award, valued at $4,500, is given to a member of the varsity men’s basketball team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus and Warrior Hall of Famer, Peter Savich.

John Shoniker Football Awards

Two awards, valued at $4,500, are given to members of the varsity football team. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus John Shoniker.

Slater and Amoroso Family Swimming Excellence Awards

One or more awards, valued at up to $4,500 each, are given to members of the varsity swimming team. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Waterloo alumni Jeff Slater and Marissa Amoroso. 

Dr. Douglas Snyder Alumni Athletic Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to an exceptional student-athlete in a health-related program, who best displays the values and mission of the interuniversity athletics program, and who has a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the health sciences. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a minimum academic average of 70%. Preference will be given to members of the varsity football, varsity men’s ice hockey or varsity women’s ice hockey teams, with further preference given to someone who has demonstrated good character and leadership skills through involvement in faith-based extracurricular or volunteer activities. An application is required by November 1. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus Dr. Doug Snyder.

Steeves Family Warrior Recreation Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a second- or third-year undergraduate student who has made significant contributions to Warrior Recreation in the past 12 months and who best displays the values and mission of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Successful candidates must demonstrate how their involvement with Warrior Recreation has impacted their student experience, how they have had an impact on the participation/involvement of others in Warrior Recreation, and how they have served as a positive role model within Warrior Recreation. Interested students should submit an application by November 1. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo staff Adam Steeves and Donna Rheams. 

St. Paul’s University College Women’s Basketball Excellence Awards

One or more awards, valued at up to $4,500, are given to members of the varsity women’s basketball team. These awards recognize athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by St. Paul’s University College. 

Carl Totzke Athletic Excellence Award

One or more awards, valued at up to $3,500 each, are given annually to student-athletes who are members of the Waterloo football team. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to the team and school. This fund is made possible by a donation from Cam Wood in honour of Carl Totzke.

Track and Field Alumni Excellence Awards

One or more awards, valued at $1,000 each, are given to members of the varsity track and field team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team and the school. This fund is supported by Warrior track and field alumni Justin Conlon and Chantel Pilon. 

Twin Cities Football Excellence Awards

Two awards, valued at $2,000 each, are given to two members of the varsity football team who completed the most recent season with the Twin Cities Minor Tackle Football Association’s Varsity Predators. These awards recognize athletic talent, a commitment to good sportsmanship on and off the field, a commitment to being a positive contributor to the community, and contribution to Warrior Athletics and Warrior Football. This fund is supported by the Twin Cities Minor Tackle Football Association.

University of Waterloo Swim Team Excellence Award

Two or more awards are given annually to student-athletes who are members of the Waterloo swim team. The awards recognize and encourage members to achieve a level of performance in the sport of swimming that scores points for the team at the OUA conference championships.

University of Waterloo Swimming Legacy Fund

One or more awards, ranging from $500 to $1,500, have been established for students who are members of the Waterloo men's or women's varsity swim team. To qualify, candidates must be in good academic standing, demonstrate financial need, and have made a leadership contribution to the varsity swimming program or the Athletic Department in general. Eligible candidates must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. Qualifying students are eligible to receive this award on more than one occasion; however, only once per calendar year. Applications should be submitted by November 1 or March 1.

Urosevic Men’s Basketball Award

One award, valued at $4,500, is given to a member of the varsity men’s basketball team. This award recognizes athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills. This fund is supported by University of Waterloo alumnus Bob Urosevic and his family.

Mary Ann Vaughan Athletics Excellence Award for Men’s Hockey

Awards, valued at a minimum of $1,000 each, are provided annually to a full-time undergraduate students who are qualified student-athlete on the Waterloo interuniversity men’s hockey team and who are in good academic standing. This fund is made possible by a donation from Mary Ann Vaughan, MA ’92.

Bob Warren Memorial Athletic Excellence Award

Two or more awards, valued at a minimum of $500 each, are given annually to student-athletes who are members of a Waterloo varsity team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contributions to Warrior Athletics and the university. The fund is made possible by a generous donation from Miller Thompson LLP as a memorial tribute to Bob Warren, a prominent lawyer and partner at Miller Thompson and a friend of the University of Waterloo.

Warrior Excellence Awards

One or more awards are given annually to the student-athletes that are the most highly ranked, athletically, among their peers on their particular team and among all student athletes. These awards reward athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics, and contribution to their team.

Warrior Football Award

One or more awards, ranging from $250 to $1,500, have been established for students in who are members of the Waterloo men's football team or have contributed to the team in another capacity. To qualify, candidates must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need and have made a leadership contribution to the men's varsity football program or the Athletic Department in general. Eligible candidates must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. Qualifying students are eligible to receive this award on more than one occasion; however, only once per calendar year. Applications should be submitted by November 1 or March 1.

Warrior Men’s Volleyball Alumni Adventure Challenge Award

One or more awards, valued at up to $4,500, are given to members of the varsity men’s volleyball team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Warrior men’s volleyball alumni and friends through fundraising efforts of the participants in the annual Warrior Men’s Volleyball Alumni Adventure Challenge. 

Warrior Women’s Alumni Golf Excellence Awards

One or more awards, valued at up to $4,500, will be given to members of the varsity women’s golf team, with preference given to first-year student athletes. If there are no qualified first-year student athletes, the award/s may be given to upper-year student athletes. These awards recognize athletic talent, contribution to Warrior Athletics and their team, and strong leadership skills.

Warrior Women’s Student Athlete Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a female varsity athlete on any team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by Chris Read and his family.

Roly and Brigitte Webster Athletic Excellence Award

One award, valued at $2,000, is given to a female varsity athlete on any team. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and school. This fund is supported by Roly and Brigitte Webster.

Welmar Recreational Products Men’s and Women’s Hockey Awards

Two awards, valued at $2,000 each, are given to a member of each of the varsity men’s and women’s hockey teams. This award recognizes athletic talent and contribution to Warrior Athletics, their team, and the school. This fund is supported by the Welmar Group. 

Whiteside Family Entrance Scholarship in Arts

A scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. Selection will be based on academic achievement and community and/or extracurricular school involvement including sport or intramurals. This fund is made possible by a donation from Judson D. Whiteside and his family.

Provincial and federal aid policies state that scholarships, awards, and bursaries provided to students receiving provincial and/or federal student aid could reduce funding entitlements. Please contact Student Awards & Financial Aid if further clarification is required.
