Entrance Scholarships and Awards

Faculty of Science

Arebi Family Science Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, will provide assistance to outstanding undergraduate first-year students entering the Faculty of Science. This fund has been established by Mohammad Arebi and named in honour of his family.

Canadian General-Tower Scholarships in the Environment

Three scholarships, valued at up to $1,500 each, have been established by Canadian General-Tower Ltd., to encourage academic excellence, attract outstanding students, and to enhance the University's programs related to the environment. The scholarships are made annually to outstanding students entering Year One in each of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and one of Environment and Resource Studies, Geography and Environmental Management, or Planning in the Faculty of Environment.

CHEM 13 NEWS Research Assistantships

The Department of Chemistry offers CHEM 13 NEWS Research Assistantships to recognize academic excellence in students proceeding to a degree in Chemistry. The awards are made for one year at a time and are valued at $1,000 for one year. Award holders are required to work with a professor or her/his research group within the Department. Awards to students entering Year One are made on the basis of performance on the CHEM 13 NEWS Examination competition held in May.

Conestoga-Rovers & Associates Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students entering first year of Civil Engineering or to students interested in pursuing a major in Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science. These scholarships are made possible by a generous donation from three founders of Conestoga-Rovers & Associates: Don Haycock, Frank Rovers, and Ron Schwark.

Earth & Environmental Sciences Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences.

David and Christine Edwards Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,600, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Pharmacy program on the basis of academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular activities. This fund is made possible by a donation from David J. Edwards, Hallman Director, School of Pharmacy and Christine Edwards.

Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (FCCP) (Ontario) Education Foundation Entrance Scholarship in Accounting

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering the first year of Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy program in the Faculty of Science. This award is sponsored by the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (Ontario) Education Foundation.

Penelope Glasser Memorial Scholarship in Science

Several scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year of a program in the Faculty of Science. This fund is made possible by a donation from the estate of Penelope Glasser (BA ’64), who believed very strongly in the study of sciences.

Bill Harvie Scholarship/Fellowship

One award, valued at $5,000 over four years, is provided to an undergraduate student entering Year One of Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy. Selection will be based on academic achievement and leadership qualities. In Years One and Two recipients will receive scholarship payments of $1,000. In Years Three and Four recipients will receive fellowship payments of $1,500 in exchange for teaching/research assistance. Continuance in Years Two, Three, and Four will be dependent on the recipient maintaining a minimum 80% overall average.

KPMG Entrance Scholarship

Several scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering Year One of any Accounting program at the University of Waterloo. Those programs include Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy, and Computing and Financial Management. This fund is made possible by donations from KPMG alumni and the KPMG Foundation

A. Donald Maynes Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,500 each, will provide assistance to outstanding undergraudate students entering first year in Physical Sciences. This fund has been established by Jacqueline Maynes to honour the contributions of her late husband Donald Maynes who was a professor in the Department of Chemistry.

Kay and Harry McLeod Chemistry Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued up to $4,500, or two scholarships valued up to $2,250 each, will be awarded annually to undergraduate students entering Year One of the Physical Sciences program in the Faculty of Science in recognition of their academic achievements. The scholarship recipient(s) will have indicated an interest in selecting Chemistry as a major. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of Kay and the late Harry McLeod. The McLeods had a long standing relationship with the Department of Chemistry, where Dr. Harry McLeod was a former Chair of the department, a respected faculty member, and one of the founders of the Faculty of Science and Chemistry co-operative education programs.

Merrill Lynch Scholarship of Excellence in Accountancy Studies

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of Accounting and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy. This award was established by Merrill Lynch Canada Inc.

NOVA Chemicals Entrance Scholarships

Two scholarships, valued at up to $1,000 each, are awarded: one to a student entering first year of the Physical Sciences program in the Faculty of Science and one to a student entering Chemical Engineering. These scholarships are made possible through a donation from NOVA Chemicals Corporation in recognition of their long standing relationship with the University of Waterloo through co-op and graduate hires from the Faculties of Science and Engineering.

Gwilym Roberts Memorial Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each over two years, are awarded annually to undergraduate students entering first year of an Honours Earth Sciences program within the Faculty of Science. The scholarship recipient(s) will have indicated an interest in selecting Geology Specialization as a major. The second portion of the award, payable in 2A, is dependent on the student maintaining an 80% overall average in Year One and continued interest in the Geology Specialization. These scholarships pay tribute to the remarkable professor and first Economic Geologist in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Gwilym Roberts, who paved the foundation for many geologists in their careers.

Sandilands Family Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Science. The recipient will have indicated an interest in selecting Biology as a major on their university application. This fund is made possible by the family of Al Sandilands (BSc 1970).

Sir Isaac Newton Scholarships in Physics

Scholarships, ranging in value from $1,000 to $5,000 in Year One may be offered to students interested in majoring in Physics. The awards are based on secondary school marks and the Sir Isaac Newton Examination. Following Year One, students will have a chance to compete for a number of upper-year scholarships ranging in value from $400 to $1,000. In addition, students will have an opportunity to pursue Sir Isaac Newton research assistant ships valued at $400 per term beginning in Year Two.

Sullivan Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering first year in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science from Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School, Brantford, Ontario. Preference will be given to students entering Engineering.

Suncor Emerging Leaders Award

Four or more scholarships, valued at up to $10,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students in Engineering and Science programs: three to students entering first year in Chemical, Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering and one to a student entering first year of a Science and Business program or second year of an Earth & Environmental Sciences program. The scholarships are payable over four years for all programs, except Earth & Environmental Sciences, where it is payable over the last three years of the program. These scholarships are funded by a generous donation from Suncor in recognition of the outstanding programs at the University of Waterloo and to meet the needs of the Canadian oil and gas industry through trained human resources capable of playing a leadership role in the sector.

University of Waterloo HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships

In May 2015, President Hamdullahpur accepted an invitation from the UN Women’s HeForShe campaign for the University of Waterloo to participate in their Impact 10x10x10 framework alongside governments, leading universities, and global businesses. HeForShe is a global effort to engage men and boys in removing the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential, and together positively reshaping society. As part of our commitment to this campaign, the University of Waterloo will provide six scholarships, valued at up to $12,000 each over four years, to outstanding female students admitted to Year One of an undergraduate science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree program in which females are currently underrepresented. Recipients will receive $1,500 per academic term for up to eight terms. Continuance of the scholarship beyond Year One is dependent on the student maintaining an 80% overall average and continued full-time enrolment in an eligible STEM program. Selection will be based on academic achievement combined with any other Faculty-specific entrance scholarship criteria. All female applicants to the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and eligible programs in the Faculty of Science are considered and a separate application form is not required. 

Professor Thammaiah Viswanatha Memorial Entrance Scholarship in Biochemistry

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering Year One of the Life Sciences program in the Faculty of Science, with a stated intention of pursuing a major in Biochemistry, and on the basis of academic excellence. This fund is made possible by donations from family and friends of Professor Thammaiah Viswanatha (TV) in honour of his lifelong dedication to teaching and research. TV served as a biochemistry professor from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. As Distinguished Professor Emeritus, he remained very active in research until his death at the age of 82.

K.A. Woolner Memorial Entrance Scholarship in Physics

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, is awarded annually to an undergraduate student entering first year of a program in the Faculty of Science. The recipient will have indicated an interest in selecting Physics as a major. This fund is made possible by donations from Professor Woolner’s family, friends, and colleagues in recognition of his lifelong dedication to teaching and his numerous contributions to the Faculty of Science.
