Entrance Bursaries and Awards

University of Waterloo Entrance Bursaries

Entrance bursaries are awarded to assist students who have financial need. Approximately 1,000 entrance bursaries, valued at up to $4,000 each, are available for students entering first-year programs at the University of Waterloo, Renison University College, and St. Jerome's University. To be eligible for this bursary, candidates must have lived in Ontario for at least 12 months prior to beginning their post-secondary education and must be able to demonstrate a financial need during their first year of studies. The application deadline is mid-April. For additional information and application details visit the Future Students website. 

Dr. Reed Dawkins Entrance Award

An award, valued at $3,000, is provided annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Optometry program on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. This fund was made possible through a gift from the estate of Dr. Reed Dawkins, a Waterloo Optometry graduate from the Class of 1972. Students will be invited to apply in July of each year.

Deer Ridge Entrance Award

Established by the Deer Ridge Charitable Foundation to reflect its concern for the youth of the Region of Waterloo, one or more awards are available each year to full-time students entering the University of Waterloo from a secondary school in the Region of Waterloo. To be eligible, candidates must have lived in the Region of Waterloo for at least 10 years and demonstrate good academic achievement and financial need. Participation in extracurricular activities in the school and community may also be a consideration. For additional information and an application form visit the Prospective Students website at uwaterloo.ca/find-out-more/financing/scholarships. Completed applications must be submitted by mid-April.

Roger Downer Entrance Award in Biology

One or more awards, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded to undergraduate students entering Year One in the Faculty of Science who are interested in majoring in Biology. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum admission average of 80%, must have demonstrated financial need, and must be Ontario residents. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary.

Downsview Secondary School Alumni Entrance Award

An award, valued at up to $1,000, is given annually to a student from Downsview Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario entering first year at the University of Waterloo. This student must have demonstrated financial need and must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from a Downsview Secondary School alumnus to encourage and assist students from his high school to attend the University of Waterloo.

Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Entrance Awards

Three awards, valued at $5,000 each, are awarded annually to students entering first year of a full-time undergraduate degree program who have demonstrated financial need and a minimum admission average of 80%. The awards are renewable for up to three additional years provided the students achieve a cumulative average of 75% each year, and continue to enrol in their program on a full-time basis. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary.

Wayne C. Fox Entrance Award in Arts

Two awards, valued at up to $2,500 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering full-time undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum admission average of 80%, must have demonstrated financial need, and must be Ontario residents. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary.

Gibbons Award

An award, valued at up to $2,000, is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year One who has a minimum overall average of 80%, has a demonstrated financial need, and is an Ontario resident. To be considered, students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from Mr. George Gibbons who believes that his investment in talented, University of Waterloo-educated students will result in far-reaching benefits for Canada at home and abroad. 

Gort Chong Family Award

An award, valued at $2,000, is provided annually to an undergraduate student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management, Computing and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy or Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy program in the faculties of Arts, Mathematics or Science. Eligible candidates must have a minimum admission average of 80%, demonstrate financial need, and be an Ontario resident. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from John Gort, BA ’93 Accounting and Dorothy Chong BMATH ’94 Accounting.

Goulet Engineering Undergraduate Bursary

A bursary, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year One in the Faculty of Engineering who is in good academic standing and who has a demonstrated financial need as determined by UWaterloo. Canadian citizens, permanent residents and study permit/visa students are eligible for consideration. To be considered, students must complete a UW bursary application. This fund is made possible by a donation from Patrick Goulet, a 1990 master’s graduate from the Electrical Engineering program.

Fred Groch Entrance Bursary

Two bursaries, valued at $3,000 each, are awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Year One of any program in the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. To be considered, students must apply for the Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from Fred Groch who passionately supports higher education.

Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Ltd. Awards

Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Ltd. has established an award fund to recognize academic excellence and assist with financial need. Up to six awards, valued at $3,000 each, will be provided to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Year One of any program. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum admission average of 80%, must have demonstrated financial need, and must be Ontario residents. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary.

HSBC Bank Canada Entrance Award in Environment and Business

One or two awards, valued at $1,000 – $2,000 each, are presented annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Year One of the Environment and Business program who have a minimum admission average of 80%, demonstrated financial need, and demonstrated commitment to community service. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from HSBC Bank Canada.    

Physics Alumni Award

A fund has been established by University of Waterloo alumni to provide financial assistance to students enrolled in Year One of the Faculty of Science who are interested in majoring in Physics. One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $1,000 each may be awarded. To be eligible, candidates must have a strong academic standing, must have demonstrated financial need, and must be Ontario residents. Interested students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary.

Region of Waterloo Pharmacists’ Association Bursary

One or more bursaries, valued at up to $1,500, are awarded annually to undergraduate students from Waterloo Region or Wellington County entering first year in the School of Pharmacy with financial need. This fund is made possible by a donation from The Region of Waterloo Pharmacists’ Association whose membership is drawn from pharmacist in the community, hospital, academic and industry sectors. The Association values education, community and collaboration.

Schoenmakers Family Award

One or more awards, valued at up to $1,500 each, are provided annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Year One who have a minimum overall average of 80%, demonstrated financial need, and are Ontario residents. To be considered, students must apply for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary. This fund is made possible by a donation from Mr. Jack Schoenmakers who believes that his investment in talented, University of Waterloo-educated students will result in far-reaching benefits for Canada at home and abroad.

Klaus Woerner Memorial Award

In 2005, family, friends, and colleagues of Klaus Woerner established a fund for outstanding students entering the School of Pharmacy. Several awards, valued at approximately $4,000 each, will be provided to students based on a combination of admission marks and financial need.

Frank and Juliana Wong Award

One or more awards, valued at up to $4,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering the School of Pharmacy who have demonstrated financial need. This fund is made possible by a donation from Dr. Frank Wong and Juliana Wong. As residents of Waterloo region and Frank a practicing family physician, they were motivated by their desire to promote and develop local pharmaceutical and health care.

Linda Young Award in Accounting and Finance

An award, valued at up to $2,000, is provided annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Accounting and Financial Management, Computing and Financial Management, Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy, or Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy program. Interested students must submit an application for the University of Waterloo Entrance Bursary program. This fund is made possible by a donation from Linda Young, a graduate of the Math/Accounting program at the University of Waterloo.

Provincial and federal aid policies state that scholarships, awards, and bursaries provided to students receiving provincial and/or federal student aid, could reduce funding entitlements. Please contact Student Awards & Financial Aid if further clarification is required.
