Arts Academic Regulations and Advice

Course Selection and Course Load

Unit Weights

Academic Courses with a 0.25 Unit Weight

In some instances a course may have a 0.25 academic course unit weight. Courses with a 0.25 academic course unit weight may be accumulated in pairs to equal 0.5 academic course unit to a maximum of 1.0 academic course unit (four 0.25 credit courses). Only the first four 0.25 credit courses that have been successfully completed will count towards the "total passed units" and towards the degree requirements; grades for any 0.25 credit courses taken thereafter will not be included in the average calculations. Failing grades prior to the point of passing four 0.25 credit courses are included in the average calculations. These two rules apply to all degrees in the Faculty of Arts including those academic plans (e.g., Music, Fine Arts) which require students to take more than four 0.25 credit courses to satisfy degree requirements.

Co-op Work Terms

These carry a weight of 0.5 unit each and are only required of students in co-operative programs. No academic credit is given for the work-term credits towards the Bachelor's degree, however, completion of the minimum number of work terms is a requirement to receive the co-op designation upon graduation.

Professional Development (PD) Courses

These carry a weight of 0.5 unit each and are only required of students in co-operative programs. No academic credit is given for the PD courses towards the Bachelor's degree, however, completion of the modules is a requirement for enrolment and continuation in the co-op program and to receive the co-op designation upon graduation.

Note

Work-term credits and PD course credits cannot be substituted for academic course credit.
