Arts Academic Plans

Students enrolled in any degree program may pursue a minor designation in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies. 

The Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Minor requires successful completion of a minimum of four academic course units (eight courses) in SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

• SMF 206, SMF 207, SMF 310
• one of SMF 204, PSYCH 236
• one of SMF 317/HIST 317, SMF 318/HIST 318, SMF 319 (see Note 2)
• three additional courses from the following SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses, including one at the 300-level or above:
  • one of ENGL 108E/WS 108E, ENGL 208C, ENGL 208E/WS 208E, ENGL 208N, ENGL 217, HIST 213, HIST 277, HIST 313, ITALST 111, JS 120/RS 111, PHIL 201, PHIL 202/WS 222, PHIL 210J, PHIL 219J, PHIL 318J, RS 150, RS 180, RS 254, RS 324, RS 325/WS 320

Notes

1. Students are encouraged to make note of course prerequisites and discuss their Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) plan and course progression with the SMF academic advisor.
2. Students should plan to take an introductory HIST course prior to 3A to ensure requisites are met for SMF 317/HIST 317, SMF 318/HIST 318, or SMF 319. 
3. No one course may fulfill more than one requirement within any Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies plan.
