A Joint Honours academic plan with Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies may be taken in combination with most Arts disciplines in which an Honours academic plan is offered or with many Honours majors in other faculties.
Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative average of 75% in SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses.
Eligibility for graduation in the Joint Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:
- Appropriate Program-level requirements for the Home Faculty, including at least 20 academic course units (40 courses). If the Home Faculty is Arts, see Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
Note: In practice, depending on the number of courses required by the second discipline (i.e., overall and for the major) and the number of electives that students choose to take, more than 40 courses may be necessary for graduation.
- Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements:
- at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
- SMF 205, SMF 206, SMF 207, SMF 208, SMF 220, SMF 230, SMF 310, SMF 460
- one of SMF 204, PSYCH 236
- one of SMF 304, SMF 305, SMF 365
- one of SMF 306, SMF 307, SMF 366, PSYCH 354/PSYCH 354R
- one of SMF 317/HIST 317, SMF 318/HIST 318, SMF 319 (see Note 2)
- one of SMF 461, SMF 462
- one of SMF 490, SMF 494, SMF 496, SMF 498
- two additional courses from the balance of those courses above and the following SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses:
- one of ENGL 108E/WS 108E, ENGL 208C, ENGL 208E/WS 208E, ENGL 208N, ENGL 217, HIST 213, HIST 277, HIST 313, ITALST 111, JS 120/RS 111, PHIL 201, PHIL 202/WS 222, PHIL 210J, PHIL 219J, PHIL 318J, RS 150, RS 180, RS 254, RS 324, RS 325/WS 320
- ANTH 261, FINE 262/WS 262, GERON 220/HLTH 220, PSYCH 235, PSYCH 318, SDS 353R, SDS 354R, SMF 301, SMF 308, SMF 309, SMF 367, SOC 200, SOC 275, SOC 325, SOC 355J, SOC 369J, SOC 206/WS 209, SOCWK 321R/SWREN 321R; no more than one of SOCWK 355R, SOCWK 357R, SOCWK 390A, SOCWK 390B; WS 101
- Plan-level requirements for the second major.
Notes
- Students are encouraged to make note of course prerequisites and discuss their Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) plan and course progression with the SMF academic advisor.
- Students should plan to take an introductory HIST course prior to 3A to ensure requisites are met for SMF 317/HIST 317, SMF 318/HIST 318, or SMF 319.
- SMF 460 and SMF 461 include both a weekly seminar component and weekly practicum placement. Students in arts departmental co-op and joint honours plans are encouraged to discuss the timing of SMF 460 with the SMF academic advisor.
- No one course may fulfill more than one requirement within any SMF plan.
