Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative German average of 75%.
Eligibility for graduation in the Honours German academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:
- Appropriate Program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
- German Plan-level requirements:
- at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in German with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
- GER 201, GER 202, GER 211, GER 212, GER 271, GER 272, GER 331, GER 334, GER 431
- two of GER 303, GER 304, GER 307, GER 308, GER 309
Notes
- If any required courses are waived for students with advanced language skills, they must be replaced by GER electives.
- A number of German language courses can be taken concurrently. Students majoring in German or preparing for work or study terms in German-speaking Europe are encouraged to take some courses in tandem: GER 201 and GER 211 together; GER 202 and GER 212 together; GER 303, or GER 304, or GER 307, or GER 308, or GER 309 with either GER 331 or GER 334.
- Students may elect to take up to two courses from the following list in place of GER electives for any German academic plan: APPLS 301, DUTCH 101, DUTCH 102, DUTCH 201, DUTCH 202, ENGL 218, FINE 112, HIST 223, HIST 247, HIST 265, HIST 341, HIST 358, MUSIC 254, MUSIC 255, MUSIC 260, MUSIC 261, RS 211/JS 203, RS 272/JS 233. Grades achieved in these courses will be included in the calculation of the German major average.
- Students wishing to gain extra certification of their language skills are encouraged to take two German competency tests: the Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) after GER 212 and the Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (ZDfB) after GER 307. Contact the undergraduate officer for more details.
- Students may be able to substitute courses taken at other institutions (e.g., Wilfrid Laurier University) for the elective courses offered at the University of Waterloo. Contact the undergraduate officer for details.
