Paul Berg Memorial Award
One award, valued at up to $500, is awarded annually to an undergraduate student in second year or above who demonstrates involvement in extracurricular music activities on campus, and who has a minimum cumulative average of 75%. The award is made possible by friends of Paul Berg, Director of the University Centre of the Arts, 1960-1975, and conductor of the Schneider Male Chorus, 1942-1975. Applications are required by November 1 each year.
Doreen Brisbin Award
One award, valued at up to $1,000, is awarded annually to a female student entering Year Four of an Honours program in which women are currently underrepresented. Currently these programs include all Engineering programs, most Mathematics programs, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Economics, but are subject to change as the student population changes. Selection is based on academic achievement and demonstration of a sincere interest in, and commitment to, the area of study in which the student is enrolled. Interested third-year female students should apply by March 15. This fund is made possible by donations from friends and colleagues of Dr. Brisbin in recognition of her contributions as a former Chemistry professor and an Honorary Member of the University.
Child Language Research Award
One award, valued at $750, is provided annually to a graduating undergraduate student enrolled in any program at the University of Waterloo. Selection will be based on academic excellence, prior research experience related to child language development, and a demonstrated commitment to future postgraduate study in the area of child language development. No application is required. This fund is made possible by a donation from Knowledge in Development Inc.
Collective Movement Award
One award, valued at up to $1,200, is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four in any faculty. Students must be in good academic standing and must submit an essay (1,000 words maximum) describing the positive impact they have had to the African, Caribbean, or Black communities within Canada through extracurricular or volunteer involvement. Interested students should submit an application by October 15. This fund is made possible by donations from individuals and corporations who are part of the African, Caribbean, or Black communities in Canada, or who are advocates for these communities.
C.U.P.E. Local 793 Award
Several awards, valued at $500 each, are available to deserving full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program who have contributed to the University or the community through extracurricular or volunteer activities and who have a minimum overall average of 70%. Work experiences and financial need may also be considered. To be eligible to apply, a student must be a Union employee, a spouse of a Union employee or a child or grandchild of a Union employee. Interested students should submit an application prior to the study term by July 15, November 15, or March 15.
e-launch Awards
Up to five awards, valued at $4,000 each, will be provided each term to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Conrad’s Enterprise Co-op Initiative (E Co-op) on the basis of academic achievement, the viability of the proposed business, and preparedness to lead a venture. Interested students should submit an application at least two months before the beginning of the planned E Co-op term. This fund is made possible by a donation from Nigel Stokes, MASc 1983, to enable aspiring entrepreneurs to spend one or more co-op terms developing their businesses.
Federation of Students Engagement Award
Up to three awards, valued at $1,000 each, are provided annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in any program at the University of Waterloo who have made meaningful contributions through extracurricular activities associated with the Federation of Students. Interested students should submit a letter (maximum two pages) and a résumé by October 15. This fund is made possible by a gift from the Federation of Students.
Governor General's Academic Medal
The Governor General of Canada provides three silver medals annually to the undergraduate students graduating with the highest academic standing at the University of Waterloo.
Jim Kalbfleisch Award
One or more awards, valued at up to $1,500 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four of any program who have achieved a minimum overall average of 75% and who have demonstrated involvement in student government at the University of Waterloo. Interested students should submit an application by October 15. This fund is made possible by a donation from Jim Kalbfleisch and his friends and family in honour of his retirement.
Angus Kerr-Lawson Essay Prize in Philosophy
One prize, valued at $500, will be awarded annually to a full-time graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in any program at the University of Waterloo. Selection will be based on the submission of the best essay in American Philosophy or Philosophical Naturalism, with a preference for essays bearing on the work of Jorge Santayana. Professors should submit student essays drawn from University of Waterloo courses, research areas, or dissertations that the professors teach or supervise in response to a call for nominations from the Department of Philosophy, which will be made every year during the winter term. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Hall and Kerr-Lawson families in memory of Angus Kerr-Lawson.
James D. Leslie Prize
The James D. Leslie Prize is awarded to a student who has achieved a first-class standing and who has earned at least half of the credits for the undergraduate degree through online courses at the University of Waterloo. Graduates from both Spring and Fall convocation ceremonies are candidates for the Prize, which is awarded at Fall convocation. Recipients receive a certificate and a financial award. The Prize is named for James D. Leslie, a professor of Physics at the University of Waterloo, who conceived and initiated the “Online” program (formerly referred to as Correspondence or Distance Education).
NSERC Undergraduate Research Awards tenable at the University of Waterloo
NSERC rewards excellence and nurtures Canada’s brightest young minds by funding top science and engineering students in Canada’s post-secondary institutions. NSERC Undergraduate Research Awards enable the recipient to gain research experience by working full time with an NSERC grant holder on a research project in a university laboratory. These awards have a value of $4,500 (plus a minimum 25% supplement from Waterloo), over 16 weeks. Please refer to the Office of Research's website for full details.
University of Waterloo 50th Anniversary Undergraduate Scholarship
The year 2007 marked the University of Waterloo’s 50th anniversary with the theme, the spirit of ‘why not’. This theme aptly describes Waterloo’s entrepreneurial heritage and its philosophy for the future. Talented people are at the heart of this pioneering spirit, and it is an appropriate time in the University’s history to build an endowment which will provide scholarships to University of Waterloo students in perpetuity. Many sponsors from the community have given generously to help establish this fund. Several scholarships will be available to full-time undergraduate students in any Faculty who have completed Year One, Two, or Three with an 80% average or higher.
University of Waterloo Alumni Gold Medals
University of Waterloo Alumni provide a maximum of six gold medals annually to be awarded in recognition of academic excellence. Each medal will be awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty. The medals may be awarded, at either the Spring or Fall Convocation, as follows: one each to a student in each of the six Faculties of the University who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance on completion of an undergraduate degree.
University of Waterloo Staff Association Award
Each term, up to two awards, valued at $500 each, are provided to deserving full- or part-time undergraduate students in a degree program at the University of Waterloo who have contributed to the University or the community through extracurricular or volunteer activities and who have a minimum overall average of 70%. To be eligible for consideration, a student must be a current member of the Staff Association or be the child, spouse, grandchild, or dependent of a current Staff Association member. Financial need may also be considered in the selection process. This award is sponsored by the University of Waterloo Staff Association and further supported by the Education Credit Union. Interested students should submit an application during the study term by October 15, February 15, or June 15.
Alyson Woloshyn Leadership Award
One or more awards, valued at $1,000 each, are provided annually to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in Year Three or Four of any program who have made significant leadership contributions to the student experience through involvement with activities such as student government, varsity athletics, orientation, and/or residence life. Candidates must have a minimum overall average of 75%. Interested students should submit an application by October 15. This fund is made possible by a donation from friends and family of the late Alyson Woloshyn to celebrate the living legacy of a woman who constantly moved people from dreaming to achieving.
