Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

Department of Kinesiology

Overview

The kinesiology plan encompasses the scientific study of human movement in order to optimize health and prevent illness and injury. The plan provides a foundation in anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, and neuroscience, complemented by biology and chemistry courses from the Faculty of Science. In keeping with an emphasis on applied and experiential learning, competence is developed through various laboratory courses, facilities, and assignments as well as advanced practicum courses in sports injury assessment, cardiac rehabilitation, and movement assessment. With one of the largest kinesiology departments in North America, students also have the unique opportunity to take specialized kinesiology electives, and distinguish themselves with expertise in areas such as gait analysis, altitude and aerospace physiology, motor learning, or low back disorders.

Students intending to pursue careers in medicine or other health professions (e.g., chiropractic, physical therapy) can gain additional preparation through the department's Pre-Health Professions Option. The department also offers the following minors – an Ergonomics and Injury Prevention Minor, and a Rehabilitation Sciences Minor – for those wishing to concentrate their studies within these areas related to kinesiology. Students interested in examining the effects of diet and food on human health and disease can complement their plan with the department’s Human Nutrition Minor. The plan may also be tailored to individual interests in other disciplines by selecting elective courses from other departments at the university, and by using electives to complete a complementary option or minor (e.g., chemistry, biology, gerontology, management science).

Kinesiology graduands enjoy career success in areas such as rehabilitation, ergonomics, and fitness/exercise management, while others pursue further specialization in graduate programs or professional schools (e.g., medicine, physiotherapy, chiropractic, and occupational therapy).
