Arts Academic Plans

The Education Specialization allows Honours Social Development Studies students to develop a concentration of courses related to studies in education that will be noted on their transcript. It is designed for students interested in professions within the private and public sectors and in graduate studies that focus on teaching and learning, children and youth, program development and evaluation, and policy analysis. Open to any student in good standing completing an Honours degree in Social Development Studies. 

Requirements

The Education Specialization requires successful completion of a minimum of 3.5 academic course units (seven courses) with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:

• at least two of:
  • PSYCH 212/PSYCH 212R
  • SDS 205R/HIST 225, SDS 210R/LS 273, SDS 220R
  • SOC 207R/SOC 207
• at least two of:
  • SDS 415R, SDS 425R, SDS 450R, SDS 490R, SDS 495R, SDS 496R, SDS 499A, SDS 499B
  • Note: Students in the honours seminar, apprenticeship courses and senior honours essay/thesis must select topics related to education.
• at least one of:
  • PACS 314
  • PHIL 311
  • PSYCH 213R, PSYCH 312/PSYCH 312R, PSYCH 315
  • SDS 215R
  • SOC 204R, SOC 307
• and the remaining courses from: 
  • APPLS 301, APPLS 304R
  • ENGL 208C, ENGL 217
  • FR 484
  • PSYCH 317, PSYCH 319
  • SDS 370R
  • SOC 416
  • SOCWK 301R, SOCWK 355R 

Notes

1. Honours Social Development Studies students may select only one Honours specialization.

2. All courses taken towards the Education Specialization as listed above will count towards the student's Social Development Studies major average. If achievement in the non-major courses causes a drop below the major average requirements, students will normally be allowed to continue in the Social Development Studies major but without the specialization.

3. Other courses may be considered as approved upon written request to, and written confirmation from, the Chair of Social Development Studies.
