For Bachelor of Arts students, the first academic year in Arts is usually an exploratory year during which students take courses (a maximum of five courses per term) in a wide range of subjects leading to the declaration of a General plan (major or Liberal Studies) or Honours plan with choice of major in their second year. Year One students are usually classified in an Honours Arts plan. Students admitted to Social Development Studies (Regular) declare General or Honours following a highly specified Year One plan. Students admitted to Arts and Business (Regular and Co-op) choose their Honours major on the basis of their first-year course choices. Several courses in first-year Arts and Business are specified by the academic plan.
Students admitted to Accounting and Financial Management (BAFM) and Computing and Financial Management (BCFM) take a number of first-year courses specified by their Honours plans.
Students admitted to Independent Studies (BIS) take courses, in consultation with an Independent Studies advisor, that prepare them for the Thesis Phase.
The Faculty of Arts recommends that its students take at least one course from a Faculty other than Arts.
Notes:
-
From time to time, due to space limitations, students admitted to the University or continuing students in good standing, cannot be granted course and academic plan selections of their choice.
-
Each first-year student's academic plan must be approved on or before class enrolment date by a first-year advisor of the Faculty of Arts.
-
Students admitted to Social Development Studies should consult the Undergraduate Officer at Renison College before selecting Year-One courses.
