The University of Waterloo requires that all research involving humans conducted by its students, staff, and faculty, on- or off-campus, is to undergo prior ethics review and clearance through the Office of Research Ethics (ORE). The ethics review and clearance process is intended to ensure that projects comply with UW's Statement on Human Research and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS), and guidelines of various agencies and professional organizations, and that the safety, rights, and welfare of participants are adequately protected.
Research ethics applications are submitted to the ORE for ethics review by the Director or Manager and/or the Human Research Ethics Committee. The Director and Manager develop and distribute educational materials, guidelines, procedural information, and sample documents related to research with human participants, and provide consultation, assistance, and support to researchers at all stages of the application and ethics review processes.
Additional details about the application and review procedures, guidelines, and educational materials can be obtained from Dr. Susan Sykes, Director, ORE at extension 36005, ssykes@uwaterloo.ca or Susanne Santi, Manager, ORE at extension 37163, ssanti@uwaterloo.ca or the ORE website at http://iris.uwaterloo.ca/ethics/human/index.htm.
