Joint Honours Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Independent Studies (BIS)

The Bachelor of Independent Studies (BIS) degree is a three-year degree awarded by the University upon successful completion of the requirements described under the Independent Studies academic plan. It is designed for highly motivated students who learn well independently. The joint plan requires meeting all requirements of both plans. Students who choose the joint Honours Bachelor of Science (BSc) - BIS may require extra courses. However, courses required by the other plan can often be used to satisfy some of the requirements of the technical electives or complementary studies course groups in the Honours BSc plan.

A student in a combined degree plan completes all requirements of the Science degree in which they are enrolled and also the requirements for a degree in Independent Studies. The combined academic plans require time in addition to that required for the completion of the BSc degree. However, by doing additional academic work during academic terms and co-op work terms or off terms for regular students, it may be possible to complete the combined degree in the time frame required to complete the BSc degree.

Admission to the combined degree plans is after Year One of a Science academic plan. A clear indication of the student's ability to handle their academic plan at a high level of proficiency is required before admission is considered. An Independent Studies (IS) Admission Committee that reviews applicants determines admission to the BIS plan.
