Joint Honours Geography & Environmental Management

Many Honours plans may be combined within and between Faculties. However, before embarking on a Joint Honours plan, it is highly recommended that students consult with the Undergraduate Officer of both programs. Students must meet the requirements of both plans as stated in the Calendar and should be aware that combining some Honours plans may require more than the normal number of academic terms to complete.

Students in the Joint Honours Plan must complete 7.0 units (fourteen courses) in Geography (GEOG) and Environmental Studies (ENVS) (maximum of 2.0 ENVS units), including the following required courses:

Legend:

ENGL 109 or ENGL 129R must be completed with a grade of 65% or higher. Please see the English Language Proficiency Requirement section for the Faculty of Environment if you fail to meet this requirement.

GEOG 102 Geography and Our Planetary Environment
GEOG 181 Principles of GIScience
ENVS 178 Introduction to Environmental Research Methods

Year Two

GEOG 293 Professional and Scholarly Practice in Geography
GEOG 294 Approaches to Research in Physical Geography

Students must take at least one course from each of the three following specializations:

Earth Systems Science: one of:
GEOG 201 Fluvial Geomorphology 
GEOG 209 Hydroclimatology

Geomatics: one of:
GEOG 271 Earth from Space Using Remote Sensing
GEOG 281 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Development and Environment: one of:
GEOG 202 Geography of the Global Economy 
GEOG 203 Environment and Development in a Global Perspective

One of:
GEOG 490A/B (1.5 units) and one other 400-level GEOG course (0.5 unit)

Note: Courses in the home department equivalent to ENVS 178, ENVS 278 and GEOG 293 or GEOG 294 and GEOG 490A, GEOG 490B are accepted. If scheduling difficulties arise in meeting required courses, contact the Associate Chair (Undergraduate Studies) in Geography for possible substitute courses. 


Notes

  1. Admission to Joint Honours Academic Plans
    Admission to a Joint Honours Plan will occur no earlier than Year Two.
  2. Minimum Required Courses
    Only two units designated Environmental Studies (ENVS) may be counted in the Joint Honours Academic Plan. If both majors are taken in the Faculty of Environment, and the student's first declared major is Geography and Environmental Management, a minimum of four units must be taken outside of the Faculty of Environment. The total number of units required is 20.
  3. Average Requirements
    Geography and Environmental Management students taking Joint Honours with another department must achieve Honours standing as required by the Geography and Environmental Management Department (65% overall, 70% in Geography and Environmental Studies courses). The average required in the second major is the minimum Honours standing set by that department. Students in other departments taking Joint Honours with Geography and Environmental Management must achieve a cumulative average of 70% in Geography (GEOG) and Environmental Studies (ENVS) courses.
