Arts Academic Regulations and Advice

Re-Admission Following a Failed Decision

Students must first complete an Application for Undergraduate Re-Admission form (see Admission Forms).

Students who are given a Failed academic standing at the end of their first or second term of study and apply for re-admission will normally first complete the Foundation Term as a condition of re-admission. If their academic advisor recommends it, students may petition for exemption from the Foundation Term.

An upper-year student with more than two terms of study who has received a Failed decision is eligible to apply for re-admission after an absence of two terms. Such applications will be considered only if it is the student's first failure in the Faculty of Arts.

If a student is granted re-admission:

  • the student's cumulative overall and Arts (or major) averages will be cleared, that is, grades achieved in all previous course work will not count in cumulative averages;
  • all previous University of Waterloo course attempts and grades will remain recorded on the student's transcript;
  • previous course work, where it is applied to degree requirements, is considered transfer credit and subject to transfer credit regulations;
  • it is the student's responsibility to inform him/herself of his/her transferred credits by meeting with an academic advisor, reading the transfer credit letter issued to him/her upon re-admission, and viewing his/her unofficial transcript in Quest;
  • cumulative and Arts (or major) averages for the degree will be based on courses taken following re-admission and clearing.

Students whose cumulative averages have been cleared must observe the following requirements upon re-admission:

  • complete a minimum of 7.5 additional academic course units (15 courses) for a three-year degree or ten additional academic course units (20 courses) for a four-year degree;
  • complete a minimum of half of the courses required in the major, or, for Liberal Studies, at least half of the courses must be University of Waterloo Arts courses (for three-year academic plans at least four academic course units [eight courses], for four-year academic plans at least 6.5 academic course units [13 courses]).

Notes:

  1. See Transfer Credit for further details.
  2. Students contemplating re-admission after receiving a Failed decision are strongly encouraged to consult an academic advisor prior to application.
  3. Students contemplating re-admission should take into consideration course selection dates when determining when to re-apply as course availability may be affected.
