Spanish and Latin American Studies

Honours Spanish

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative average of 60% and a cumulative Spanish average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours Spanish academic plan includes sucessful fulfillment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts.
  2. Spanish Plan-level requirements:
    • at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in Spanish with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:

Recommended Sequence of Study


Year One
SPAN 201A, 201B (Students with no Spanish will take SPAN 101, 102 in the first year and 201A, 201B in the second year). Intermediate native Spanish speakers will take SPAN 210
Four additional units


Year Two
A minimum of three units in Spanish, including SPAN 301A, 301B, (or 201A, 201B) and 227, 228 (and/or 222W, 223W)
Two additional units


Year Three
A minimum of three units in Spanish, including SPAN 401A, 401B, (or 301A, 301B), 222W, 223W (and/or 227, 228) and 326 or 327W
Two additional units


Year Four
A minimum of three units in Spanish
Two additional units


Notes:

  1. By agreement, students at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University can be expected to take courses in Spanish at either university. While most language courses are taught concurrently every year at both universities, most other courses are taught either at one university or the other, and a few courses may rotate from year to year.
  2. With the permission of the Department, students may spend the third year enrolled in an acceptable university in Spain or Latin America.
  3. Students in Years Three and Four must have the permission of the home department to enrol in Spanish courses at the 100- or 200-level.
