The University of Waterloo provides a variety of learning opportunities to accommodate the needs of people seeking either university credit or courses for professional or personal development.
Students must be admitted to the University in order to pursue credit courses. No distinction in admission standards, grading practices, or promotion policies is made between those pursuing part-time or full-time, on-campus, or online/distance study. Students who do not meet the normal admission requirements may be considered for admission under UW's Mature Student Admission Policy (for more information refer to "Admissions - Other Applicants").
Online/Distance and Continuing Education, Part-Time Studies
Through online/distance education, students can complete degree-credit courses without attending on-campus classes. Using quality learning materials in a variety of media such as CD ROMS, the Web, online discussion boards, email, and other social networking options, students can study when and where it is most convenient.
Waterloo offers approximately 250 online/distance education courses in almost 45 subject areas. It is possible to earn an undergraduate degree in Arts or Science entirely by online/distance education study. In addition, there are certificate and diploma programs (comprised of undergraduate degree-credit courses) available.
Full-time, on-campus students find online/distance education courses can be the solution when an on-campus class they want is full, will not fit into their schedule, or is not being offered. Many take a course when they are not on campus (for example, when on a work term or away for the summer).
