About the Faculty of Mathematics

Admission

Admission requirements and procedures for all plans are described in the "Admissions" section.

Most students are admitted directly from secondary school. However, students who are enrolled in another faculty in the University of Waterloo, or at another university, may apply to transfer to the Faculty of Mathematics. Applicants should have strong academic records. (See "Transfer Students" for additional policies concerning transfer students and transfer credits.) In addition, a student who has been away from formal education for more than two years may apply as a mature student. Although the University of Waterloo does not automatically offer admission to mature applicants, the Admissions Committee carefully considers previous academic records, resumes, and other biographical material before determining a candidate's suitability for university studies. You must be able to demonstrate recent academic proficiency in Mathematics at the senior high school level. For applicants who are lacking the appropriate background, the Distance Education Program offers pre-university courses in Algebra & Geometry and Calculus.
