The Faculty of Environmental Studies expects students to
demonstrate competence in English writing skills. Accordingly, all
students newly admitted to the Faculty are required to write the
English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) during their first term
of enrolment (normally scheduled during the first week of December).
All students in the Faculty of Environmental Studies are required to
write the English Language Proficiency Exam; exemptions will not be
permitted. Students demonstrate their writing competence by achieving a
passing grade on this examination: 65/90. A student will be allowed two
additional opportunities to re-write the examination if s/he does not
achieve a passing grade. If a student does not achieve a passing grade
on this examination, s/he must successfully complete the assignments of
the University of Waterloo Writing Centre. All students must achieve this requirement by the end of Year Two or they will not be allowed to continue in their studies.
Note
Students who arrange a special sitting of the ELPE outside the scheduled dates will be assessed an administrative fee.
