Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) is an interdisciplinary area of study that would be of interest to anyone with questions about sexuality, marriage, and the family. It would be particularly relevant to those who intend to pursue, or are currently involved in, a career in health care, social services, counselling, therapy, or teaching. Students may choose a Three-Year General Major (BA), a Four-Year General Major (BA), a Minor, an Honours Option, or a General Option. A Diploma in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies is available for those who wish to do some focused study in this field, but who are either not seeking a university degree or already hold such a degree. Three-Year General Sexuality, Marriage, and Family StudiesContinuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative average of 65% in SMF and SMF approved courses. Eligibility for graduation in the Three-Year General Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements: - Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. - Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements:
- at least seven academic course units (14 courses) in SMF and SMF approved courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:
- six required courses:
- SMF 204 or PSYCH 236
- SMF 205, 206, 207
- one of: SMF 304, 305, 365, 405
- one of: SMF 306 or PSYCH 354; SMF 307, 366
- eight additional courses from the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Approved List of Courses. These must be taken in at least three different disciplines and include:
- two of the following courses in theory:
ANTH 380, 404; ARTS/FINE 260; PHIL 210J, 318J; PSYCH 318; SMF 208, 308, 309, 367; SMF 306 or PSYCH 354; SOC 369J; SOCWK 321R - two of the following courses in ethics:
ANTH 350; ENGL 208N; ISS 350G, 350H; JS/RS 120; PHIL 219J; RS 100D, 236; SMF 310; SOC 355J - two of the following Humanities courses:
ENGL 108E, 208C, 208E, 217; HIST 108, 213, 313; PHIL 201, 202; RS 100M, 382; WS 101 - two of the following Social Science courses:
ANTH 261; GERON/HLTH 220; PSYCH 235; SMF 304 or 305; SMF 307, 308, 309, 365, 366, 405; one of: SMF 404, 406, 408; SOC 200, 206, 209, 275; one of: SOCWK 355R, 357R, 390A, 390B
Notes - A minimum of 7.5 of the 15 academic course units must be in Arts.
- In terms of the required "eight additional courses" listed above, students are encouraged to take more than two courses in each area but those courses will contribute to the elective component of the academic plan.

Four-Year General Sexuality, Marriage, and Family StudiesContinuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative average of 65% in SMF and SMF approved courses. Eligibility for graduation in the Four-Year General Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements: - Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
- Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements:
- at least nine academic course units (18 courses) in SMF and SMF approved courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:
- six required courses:
- SMF 204 or PSYCH 236
- SMF 205, 206, 207
- one of: SMF 304, 305, 365, 405
- one of: SMF 306 or PSYCH 354; SMF 307, 366
- twelve additional courses from the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Approved List of Courses. These must be taken in at least four different disciplines and include:
- three of the following courses in theory:

Notes - A minimum of 12.5 of the 20 academic course units must be in Arts, and a minimum of 12.5 of the 20 academic course units must be beyond the 100-level.

Minor in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family StudiesA Minor in SMF is available to students pursuing any type of Honours degree at UW (or a Four-Year General Major academic plan in Arts) who would like some specialization in this field of study. The Minor requires the successful completion of at least five academic course units (ten courses) from the following SMF and SMF approved courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 65%: - Five required courses:
- Five approved courses from the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Approved List of Courses:

Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Honours OptionAn Honours Option in SMF is available to students pursuing any type of Honours degree at UW who would like to gain specialization in the area of sexuality, marriage, and the family. The Honours Option requires the successful completion of at least seven academic course units (14 courses) from the following SMF and SMF approved courses: - Six required courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 75%:
- Eight approved courses from the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Approved List of Courses:
- one of the following courses in theory:

Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies General OptionA General Option in SMF is available to students pursuing a General degree in any undergraduate discipline or a Liberal Studies Arts degree at UW. The General Option requires the successful completion of at least five academic course units (ten courses) from the following SMF and SMF approved courses: - Five required courses, with a minimum cumulative average of 65%:

Diploma in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family StudiesThe Diploma in SMF is intended for part-time students who seek education in this field but who do not wish to obtain an undergraduate degree or already hold such a degree. The requirements are the same as those for the General Option in SMF, that is, the successful completion of at least five academic course units (ten courses): the five required SMF courses with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, plus five courses from the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Approved List of Courses. Notes for All SMF Academic Plans - Some of the required courses have prerequisites which students are recommended to take in their first year. Consult the calendar description for each course.
- Students are encouraged to discuss their electives with the SMF Director.
- PSYCH 236 can satisfy the SMF 204 requirement but credit will be given for only one of these courses.
- No one course may fulfil more than one requirement within the SMF academic plan.
- SMF 306 and PSYCH 354 are antirequisites; students may not take both these courses.
