Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements Overview
BA Degree Requirements 

The degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) is awarded by the University upon successful completion of any of the undergraduate academic plans described under "BA Academic Plans." Students must successfully complete all program- and plan-level requirements. These include:

  1. Program-Level Requirements
    • Common to All Bachelor of Arts Degrees
      • 60% overall cumulative average,
      • the Faculty of Arts Group A and B requirements (see below),
      • the Faculty of Arts Residency Requirement (see "Admissions" in the Faculty of Arts section of the Calendar),
      • the English Language Proficiency Requirement (see "English Language Proficiency Requirements" in the Faculty of Arts section of the Calendar)

      Note

    Only the first four 0.25 credit courses appearing on the student's record are included in unit and average calculations (see "Unit Weights" in the Faculty of Arts section of the Calendar).

    • Specific to the Particular Bachelor of Arts Degree
      • Three-Year General Academic Program
        a) 15 academic course units,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0.
      • Four-Year General Academic Program
        a) 20 academic course units,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level:
        • Liberal Studies: 12.5
        • all Major plans: 8.0
      • Honours Academic Program (Regular)
        a) 20 academic course units,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0.
      • Joint Honours Academic Program (Regular)
        a) 20 - 21 academic course units as specified by the discipline,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0.
      • Honours Academic Program (Departmental Co-op)
        Joint Honours Academic Program (Departmental Co-op)

        a) 20 - 21 academic course units as specified by the discipline,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0,
        c) minimum work term units: 2.0,
        d) minimum Professional Development (PD) units: 2.0.
      • Honours Arts and Business (Regular)
        Joint Honours Arts and Business (Regular)

        a) 20 - 21 academic course units as specified by the discipline,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0

      • Honours Arts and Business (Co-op)

        a) 20 - 21 academic course units as specified by the discipline,
        b) minimum academic course units above the 100-level: 8.0,
        c) minimum work term units: 2.0,
        d) minimum Professional Development (PD) units: 2.0,
        e) specific Arts and Business requirements. (See "Arts and Business" in the Faculty of Arts section of the Calendar.)
  2. Plan-Level Requirements
    • specific academic plan average and course requirements (see individual "Academic Plan" sections of the Faculty of Arts section of the Calendar for specific information).

GROUP A and B REQUIREMENTS

All Bachelor of Arts students must meet the Faculty of Arts Group A and B requirements. Group A comprises courses in the humanities, and Group B comprises courses in the social sciences.

In order to complete the Group A and B requirements an Arts student must successfully complete:

  • a minimum of 3.0 units (six courses) from Group A which must include:
    • a minimum of 1.0 unit (two courses) from Group A(i) (see note 1, below);
    • a minimum of 1.0 unit (two courses) from Group A(ii) (see note 2, below);
    • a minimum of 1.0 unit (two courses) from any of the subjects listed in A(i), A(ii) or A(iii).
  • a minimum of 2.0 units (four courses) from Group B of which:
    • no more than two courses may be in the same discipline. (A student may take more than two courses in a specific discipline in Group B but only two of them will be applied towards the fulfilment of the Group B requirement.)

Group A (i) English, History, Philosophy (see Approved Alternatives, Note 1 below)
Group A (ii)

Courses in a Language other than English:
Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian

Group A (iii) Classical Studies, Drama, Fine Arts, Music, Religious Studies, Speech Communication
Group B Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology

Notes

Approved Alternatives to the Group A and B Requirements

  1. Group A(i):
    • ARTS 301,
    • see Note 3 below.
  2. Group A (ii):
    • JS/RS 105A, 105B, 306A, 306B; RS 106A, 106B, 305A, 305B
    • Arts students should note that they may elect to meet the Group A(ii) requirement in their second or subsequent years by successfully completing two of the following courses: CLAS 201, 202, EASIA 201R, FR 291, 292, GER 271, 272, ITALST 291, 292, REES 271, 272, SPAN 218, 221.
      Note:
      • These courses are taught in English and are not open to first-year Arts students.
      • Other courses taught in English by language departments are not approved alternatives to the A(ii) requirement.
    • see Note 3 below.
    Note: These courses are the only approved alternatives to the A(ii) requirements.
  3. Cross-listed courses may be designated to fulfil any one Group A [A(i), A(ii), A(iii)] or Group B requirement. This regulation applies in the instance of a student registering in one of the pair which does not fit one of the Group A or B requirements when the other course would meet one of those (e.g., SPD 270/RS 270, GERON 352/SOC 352.) The regulation also applies to courses cross-listed in two different Arts disciplines, either one of which would fulfil a different Group A and B requirement (e.g., RS 230 /HIST 235–A(iii)/A(i), PHIL 256 /PSYCH 256–A(i)/B). Refer to "Examinations and Standings" regarding cross-listed courses.
