Arts Departmental Academic Plans

Fine Arts
Fine Arts - Overview

Admission to Fine Arts Studio Specialization at the end of Year One requires successful completion of FINE 112, 120, 121 and the submission of a portfolio of work done in FINE 120 and 121. Successful completion of FINE 110 in the first year will also be an asset, although students can take this course in their second year. The Fine Arts Department will make a final selection of students at the end of the winter term. Due to limitations of resources, fulfilment of these minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission to Fine Arts Studio academic plans. Students should be aware that most studio courses contain mandatory drawing sessions with the life model.

Three-Year General Fine Arts

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative Fine Arts average of 65%.

Eligibility for graduation in the General Fine Arts academic plan (Studio Specialization, Art History Specialization or Film Studies Specialization) includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. Fine Arts Plan-level requirements:
    • at least six academic course units (12 courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 65%. For the different Specializations, the required courses are as follows:

      Studio Specialization:
      Art History Specialization:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121
      • two additional courses in Studio
      • six additional courses in Art History

      Film Studies Specialization:
      All prospective Film Studies majors and minors need permission from Professor Jan Uhde to register in Film Studies. Current Film Studies majors and minors should consult with Professor Uhde about their program schedule.

Four-Year General Fine Arts

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative Fine Arts average of 65%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Four-Year General Fine Arts academic plan (Studio Specialization, Art History Specialization, or Film Studies Specialization) includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. Fine Arts Plan-level requirements:
    • at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 65%. For the different Specializations, the required courses are as follows:

      Studio Specialization:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121
      • at least four courses in Fine Arts chosen from FINE 220 or 221; 222 or 223; 224 or 225; 226A or 226B; 228 or 229
      • six additional courses in Fine Arts, two of which must be Art History
      • at least two Studio courses chosen from the 300-level
        Please note that most 300-level courses have very specific prerequisites - see Fine Arts course descriptions for information.

      Art History Specialization:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121, 210, 212, 213, 219, 330
      • two additional Studio courses
      • one additional course in Art History at the 200- or 300-level
      • four additional courses in Art History at the 300- or 400-level, two of which must be 390A and 490A

      Film Studies Specialization:
      All prospective Film Studies majors and minors need permission from Professor Jan Uhde to register in Film Studies. Current Film Studies majors and minors should consult with Professor Uhde about their program schedule.

Honours Fine Arts

Admission to the Honours academic plan is by consent of the department at the end of Level 1B. Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative Fine Arts average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours Fine Arts academic plan (Studio Specialization, Art History Specialization, Film Studies Specialization or Studio and Art History stream) includes sucessful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. Fine Arts Plan-level requirements:
    • at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 75%. For the different Specializations, the required courses are as follows:

      Studio Specialization:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121
      • FINE 219, 224, 225, 319
      • A pair of courses chosen from FINE 220 and 221; FINE 222 and 223 or 223A; FINE 226A and 226B; FINE 228 and 229
      • FINE 324
      • One Studio course chosen from FINE 320, 322, 326A, 328
      • One Studio course chosen from FINE 321, 323, 325, 326B, 329
        Note that FINE 321, 323, 325, 326B, 329 are worth 1.0 unit and each course has very specific prerequisites. Students must have completed all 200- and previous 300-level courses in their chosen area of concentration (i.e., painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, electronic imaging). For example, a student wishing to take FINE 321 has to have completed FINE 220, 221 & 320. Students must have at least a mark of 75% in FINE 321, 323, 325, 326B or 329 (as well as a Fine Arts average of 75%) in order to progress to FINE 472 and 473.
      • One additional Art History course
      • One additional Film Studies course
      • FINE 472, 473
        Note that each of these courses is worth 1.0 unit. Students must have completed all lower level (200- and 300-level) courses in their chosen area of concentration (i.e., painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, electronic imaging).

      Art History Specialization:
      Film Studies Specialization:
      All prospective Film Studies majors and minors need permission from Professor Jan Uhde to register in Film Studies. Current Film Studies majors and minors should consult with Professor Uhde about their program schedule.
      Studio & Art History (ten courses each in studio and art history):
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121, 210, 219, 319
      • at least four courses in Fine Arts chosen from: FINE 220 or 221; 222 or 223; 224 or 225; 226A or 226B; 228 or 229
      • one more 200-level studio course in a chosen subject area (i.e., painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, electronic imaging) from FINE 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226A, 226B, 228, 229
      • two Studio courses chosen from the 300-level, preferably in the same subject area

      • one additional Art History course from the 300-level
      • two additional Art History courses from the 200- or 300-level
      • FINE 390A
      • FINE 460A, 460B

Joint Honours in Fine Arts

Joint Honours academic plans are possible in combination with a number of departments within the Faculty of Arts. See the department for the most recent list of approved combinations.

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative Fine Arts average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Joint Honours academic plan (Studio Specialization, Art History Specialization or Film Studies Specialization) requires successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate Program-level requirements for the Home Faculty, including at least 21 academic course units. If the Home Faculty is Arts, see "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. Fine Arts Plan-Level requirements:
    For the different specializations, the required courses are as follows:

    Studio Specialization:
    • at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121, 219, 319
      • at least four courses in Fine Arts chosen from: FINE 220 or 221; 222 or 223; 224 or 225; 226A or 226B; 228 or 229
      • two additional courses in Art History;
      • at least two Studio courses chosen from the 300-level
        Please note that most 300-level courses have very specific prerequisites - see Fine Arts course descriptions for information.
      • FINE 461 (worth 1.0 units)
        Fine Arts Studio majors should bear in mind that their area of concentration in FINE 461 (painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, etc.) must be one in which they have completed all lower level (200- and 300-level) courses.

    Art History Specialization:
    • at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • FINE 110, 112, 120, 121, 219
      • seven additional courses in Art History, one of which must be 390A and two of which must be from the 300-level;
      • two additional Studio courses
      • FINE 490, 491

    Film Studies Specialization:
    All prospective Film Studies majors and minors need permission from Professor Jan Uhde to register in Film Studies. Current Film Studies majors and minors should consult with Professor Uhde about their program schedule.
  3. Plan-level requirements for the second Major.

Honours Fine Arts (Arts and Business Co-op and Regular)

A student may combine Honours Fine Arts with Arts and Business. The requirements in Fine Arts, Art History Specialization and Film Studies Specialization for the Arts and Business co-op and regular academic plans and Fine Arts, Studio Specialization, for the Arts and Business regular academic plan, are identical to the Joint Honours requirements listed above except that the minimum number of academic course units required is 20.

Students in Honours Fine Arts, Studio Specialization, Arts and Business co-op academic plan should bear in mind that their area of concentration in FINE 461 (painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, etc.) must be one in which they have completed both 200-level courses and at least one 300-level course in their chosen subject area. All other requirements are identical to the regular academic plan, as noted above.

Minor in Fine Arts

Eligibility for graduation with a Fine Arts Minor includes the fulfilment of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of five academic course units (ten courses) in Fine Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

Minor in Fine Arts - Film Studies Specialization

All prospective Film Studies majors and minors need permission from Professor Jan Uhde to register in Film Studies. Current Film Studies majors and minors should consult with Professor Uhde about their program schedule.

Eligibility for graduation with a Fine Arts Minor - Film Studies Specialization includes fulfilment of the following requirements:

Fine Arts Abroad

FINE 394 and 380/381 are offered abroad. Locations in the past have included England, Mexico, Italy and Thailand. Information about current offerings can be obtained from the department.
