Arts Academic Plans

French Studies/Études Françaises

Honours French

Continuation in this academic plan requires a minimum cumulative overall average of 60% and a minimum cumulative French major average of 70%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours French academic plan includes successful completion of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
  2. French Studies plan-level requirements:

Note

High school French immersion students, Francophone students, and students who graduated from a French high school begin above FR 192A. Those students are still required to complete a minimum of 16 French courses above the FR 192A level.

Arts and Business (Co-op and Regular)

Students may combine the Honours French academic plan with Arts and Business. In addition to the Honours French requirements, students must also complete the Arts and Business requirements. Students pursuing Arts and Business may not enrol in the French Teaching Specialization.

Honours Double Majors

Honours French may be taken in combination with most Arts majors in which an honours major is offered or with many honours majors in other faculties. Students pursuing an honours double major may not enrol in the French Teaching Specialization. For further information, see the double majors section of Available Arts Academic Plans.

French Teaching Specialization

In combination with the Honours French plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the French Teaching Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative French major average of 75% (see Note 3).
  • Successful completion of six additional courses, for a total of 11 academic course units (22 courses) in French or approved courses:
  • Completion of a total of 100 hours of relevant volunteer or paid experience under the supervision of certified teachers or qualified professionals.
    • Hours must be completed during the student's undergraduate career at Waterloo, from term 1B to 4B, inclusively.
    • All 100 hours must include experience with K-12 school age children/youth. Out of these hours, at least 50 hours must be completed in a classroom setting. Other experiences may include camps, community organizations, etc. Volunteer or paid experiences may include various formats of teaching and learning.
    • Organizations eligible for volunteer or paid experiences must be approved by the French Studies academic advisor.

Notes

  1. The French Teaching Specialization (FTS) is only open to students majoring in the Honours French academic plan. 
  2. Students who graduate from the University of Waterloo with the French Teaching Specialization are guaranteed admission to a Bachelor of Education program at Nipissing University, according to the Waterloo-Nipissing FTS agreement. Students who choose not to attend Nipissing University will still receive the French Teaching Specialization designation.
  3. Students must achieve a minimum cumulative major average of 75% in all French courses counted towards their Honours French major, including other courses listed in the specialization's requirements.
  4. Students who have completed courses towards this specialization but are not able to sustain the required 75% minimum cumulative major average but are still eligible for honours standing will normally be allowed to continue in the Honours French major but without the specialization.

Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization

In combination with the Honours French plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:

Notes

  1. The Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization is only open to students majoring in the Honours French academic plan.
  2. FR 3XX or 4XX transfer credits will be counted towards the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization if they are transferred from the Department of French Studies' French-speaking university partner: the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (Canada).
  3. Students must achieve a minimum cumulative major average of 75% in all French courses counted towards their Honours French major.
  4. Students who have completed courses towards this specialization but are not able to sustain the required 75% minimum cumulative major average but are still eligible for honours standing will normally be allowed to continue in the Honours French major but without the specialization.
  5. Students may enrol in either the French Teaching Specialization or the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization, but not both.
