Admission to Specific Honours Academic Plans

Admission to Specific Honours Academic Plans

Any honours student in good standing before their 3A term may enrol in the academic plan of their choice, subject to the limitations below. Students in 3A or later may be admitted to specific honours academic plans at the discretion of the relevant department or other academic unit, as appropriate.

  1. To be admitted in a specific honours academic plan, students must satisfy the minimum major average of the academic plan they want to enter as written in the Faculty Policies page of this Calendar (see points 5 and 6).
  2. The following plans are limited enrolment plans:
    • Actuarial Science (all plans)
    • Applied Mathematics/Engineering Specialization
    • Biostatistics
    • Business Administration and Computer Science Double Degree
    • Business Administration and Mathematics Double Degree
    • Computer Science
    • Computing and Financial Management
    • Data Science (BCS, BMath)
    • Financial Analysis and Risk Management
    • Information Technology Management
    • Mathematics/Business Administration
    • Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy (all plans)
    • Mathematics/Teaching
    • Software Engineering
  3. Students are not admitted to specific honours academic plans before their 2A term, except for the following plans:
    • Business Administration and Mathematics Double Degree
    • Computer Science (all major plans)
    • Financial Analysis and Risk Management
    • Information Technology Management
    • Mathematics/Business Administration
    • Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy (all plans)
  4. Students are normally admitted to Software Engineering in Year One.
  5. Admission to Actuarial Science requires a minimum special major average of 70% and no more than one excluded course. A student with no special major average requires a minimum cumulative average of 70% on at least 10 non-excluded courses, provided they have no failed courses. In addition, a minimum grade of 60% in MTHEL 131 is an admission requirement for the following plans:
    • Honours Actuarial Science
    • Honours Actuarial Science/Finance Specialization
    • Honours Actuarial Science/Predictive Analytics Specialization
    • Joint Actuarial Science
    • Actuarial Science Minor

For Business Administration and Mathematics Double Degree students only, a minimum grade of C- in BUS 121W can be substituted for the MTHEL 131 requirement.

  6. Admission to both the Bachelor of Mathematics (Data Science) and Bachelor of Computer Science (Data Science) academic plans require a minimum math major average of 65% (calculated over all math and computer science courses) and a minimum CS major average of 70%. In addition, students must have completed at least one term in the Faculty of Mathematics with a typical course load for a Computer Science major, have credit for either CS 136 or CS 146, and must otherwise meet all criteria for admission to a Computer Science major plan.

Transfer into the BCS (Data Science) academic plan from outside Computer Science, including from the BMath (Data Science) academic plan, is a transfer into Computer Science, and is subject to policies imposed by Computer Science upon all transfer students, including enrolment limits.

Transfer into the BMath (Data Science) academic plan from other academic plans in the Faculty of Mathematics outside of Computer Science is also subject to enrolment limits. Transfer into BMath (Data Science) does not allow a student to then transfer automatically into Computer Science academic plans.
