German studies in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies offers courses in the humanities and the social sciences, as well as in language and culture, taught in English, German, and/or Dutch. The department at the University of Waterloo is one of the largest in Canada in terms of the number of faculty members in German studies, allowing the offering of a wide range of courses in different subjects: elementary to advanced language courses, culture, film, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. Many of these offerings are designed as flexible online courses.
Students enrolled in a plan, whatever their major, are encouraged to take advantage of international exchange opportunities, allowing them to study and/or work in German-speaking countries for periods lasting from a few weeks to an entire year.
Graduates pursue careers in business, finance, government, and higher education. Students are invited to visit the Germanic and Slavic Studies website for more information, including alumni profiles.
