Successfully transforming research ideas to new productive processes and products requires knowledge not only of scientific principles but also of key economic concepts. As well as requiring familiarity with science policy, it necessitates forecasting the demand for new products or processes, assessing the market for new technologies, performing cost-benefit analyses of new projects and finding the financing for them. This program is designed to give students a dual capability as scientists and economists and prepare them for careers as economic forecasters, business economists, government economists, scientific research managers, or regulatory analysts.

Continuing in the Honours Biotechnology, Economics program requires a cumulative overall average of at least 70%, a cumulative Economics average of 70%, and a cumulative Science average of 65%.

Successful completion of this program requires:

1. 21.0 units distributed as follows:
   • 6.5 ECON units distributed as follows:
     • 5.5 ECON units: ECON 101, ECON 102, ECON 211, ECON 221, ECON 290, ECON 306, ECON 322, ECON 323, ECON 371, ECON 391, and ECON 393
     • 0.5 ECON elective unit chosen from: ECON 406, ECON 407, ECON 408, or ECON 409
     • 0.5 ECON elective unit at the 300-level or higher
   • 0.5 MGMT unit: MGMT 220
   • 2.0 SCBUS units: SCBUS 123, SCBUS 223, SCBUS 323, and SCBUS 423
   • 11.0 Science units distributed as follows:
     • 5.75 BIOL units: BIOL 130, BIOL 239, BIOL 240, BIOL 240L, BIOL 241, BIOL 308, BIOL 309, BIOL 331, BIOL 342, BIOL 361, BIOL 432, and BIOL 443
     • 1.5 BIOL lecture elective units at 300-level or higher
     • 0.5 BIOL lecture elective unit any level
     • 2.75 CHEM units: CHEM 120, CHEM 120L, CHEM 123, CHEM 123L, CHEM 266, CHEM 266L, and CHEM 237
     • 0.5 CHEM lecture elective unit at 200-level or higher
   • 0.5 ENGL unit: ENGL 193/SPCOM 193
   • 0.5 CS unit: CS 100
2. Co-operative education requirements that include:
   • A minimum of four work terms
   • Four WatPD (professional development) courses that must include PD 1, PD 11, and two PD elective courses
   • Four work-term reports:
   • One completed as part of PD 11
   • Three completed in required WKRPT courses: WKRPT 200S, WKRPT 300S, and WKRPT 400S
