Legend

†Breadth Course Requirements

Knowledge Integration (KI) students have significant flexibility in their course selection, but must be careful to choose their courses in order to meet specific overall breadth requirements in the following areas. Courses listed below are examples of those students may take to meet their breadth requirements; further guidance and a list of approved courses may be found on the Knowledge Integration website. Suitable substitutes for breadth requirements require prior consent of the associate chair, undergraduate studies, Knowledge Integration.

Breadth course requirements (listed below) are to be taken in to consideration when choosing elective courses.

Languages:

Students must take at least one 100-level or 200-level ENGL course (0.5 unit).

Students must take at least two courses (1.0 unit) in the same second language (e.g., FR 151/FR 152 Basic French, GER 101/GER 102 Elementary German, SPAN 101/SPAN 102 Introduction to Spanish, etc.)

Mathematics:

Students must take at least two courses (1.0 unit) in mathematics from the approved list on the Knowledge Integration website.

Probability and Statistics:

Students must take at least one course (0.5 unit) in probability/statistics from the approved list on the Knowledge Integration website.

Computer Science:

Students must take at least one course (0.5 unit) in computer science from the approved list on the Knowledge Integration website.

Ethics:

Students must take at least one course (0.5 unit) in ethics from the approved list on the Knowledge Integration website.

Conflict Management:

Students must take at least one course (0.5 unit) from the approved list on the Knowledge Integration website.

Natural/Physical Sciences:

Students must successfully complete a minimum of two courses (1.0 unit) that include a hands-on investigative component such as field study or lab. Corresponding labs must be taken and passed but do not count toward the 1.0 unit of natural/phyiscal sciences. For example, KIN 100 Human Anatomy: Limbs and Trunk (0.5 unit), and its corresponding KIN 100L Human Anatomy Lab (0.25 unit) count as one course (0.5 unit) for the purposes of satisfying the natural/physical sciences requirement.

Students are not limited to first-year courses or those with corresponding labs. They can satisfy the natural/physical sciences requirement with courses that include hands-on investigative components, such as:

The natural/physical sciences requirement cannot be satisfied with any “SCI”-labelled or “SCBUS”-labelled units.

SPCOM 223 must be completed with a grade of 65% or higher. See the Overview of Academic Plan Requirements section for the Faculty of Environment if you fail to meet this requirement.

  1. Minimum Required Units
Total: 20.5 units, of which up to 1.0 may be lab units.
  2. Average Requirements
Students in the Knowledge Integration Honours Regular academic plan must maintain an overall cumulative average (all courses) of at least 65% and a major cumulative average of at least 75%. The major cumulative average includes all INTEG-labelled courses, PHIL 145, SPCOM 223, and all courses taken towards the KI breadth requirements. All required courses must be passed.
  3. Per Term Course Load Allowance
No more than five courses (2.75 units) may be taken in a term without approval of the associate chair, undergraduate studies, Knowledge Integration; students seeking such approval must generally have an overall average of 80%.
  4. Senior Research Project
Students completing a joint or concurrent degree that includes an equivalent senior research project may request that the associate chair, undergraduate studies, Knowledge Integration, approve the associated courses as equivalent to INTEG 420A and INTEG 420B. Note that there may be additional requirements involved in such an arrangement, which is required to be formally organized in advance of taking the equivalent course sequence.
  5. General Information Applicable to all Faculty of Environment Plans
The Environment Academic Regulations section of this Calendar contains information, regulations, and requirements pertaining to undergraduate studies within the Faculty. It is students' responsibility to familiarize themselves with the content of this section.

A number of Faculty of Environment options, minors, and diplomas are available. A list along with requirements are outlined under the Faculty of Environment Academic Enrichment Opportunities section in this Calendar.
