Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies |

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative minimum overall average of 60% and a cumulative minimum Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major average of 70%.
Eligibility for graduation in the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan includes successful completion of the following requirements:
- Appropriate Program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
- Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements:
- a minimum Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major average of 70%
- at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses, including:
- SMF 101, SMF 205, SMF 207, SMF 208, SMF 220, SMF 230, SMF 310, SMF 400
- one of SMF 204, PSYCH 236
- two of SMF 304, SMF 305, SMF 306, SMF 307, SMF 365, SMF 366, PSYCH 354/PSYCH 354R
- five additional courses, of which two must be at the 300-level or above:
- one of CLAS 311, ENGL 108E/GSJ 108, ENGL 208C, ENGL 208E/GSJ 208E, ENGL 208N, ENGL 217, FINE 262/GSJ 262, HIST 213, HIST 214, HIST 255, HIST 277/LS 237, HIST 313, ITALST 111, JS 120/RS 111, PHIL 121, PHIL 201, PHIL 202/GSJ 222, PHIL 210J, PHIL 219J, PHIL 318J, RS 115R, RS 150, RS 180, RS 254, RS 259R, RS 325/GSJ 320
- four courses from:
- any additional SMF courses
- ANTH 350/GSJ 350, GERON 320/HLTH 320, GSJ 101, GSJ 302, LS 273/SDS 210R, PSYCH 235, PSYCH 318, SDS 353R/LS 374, SDS 354R, SOC 200, SOC 325/LS 325/GSJ 326, SOC 355J, SOC 369J, SOCWK 321R/SWREN 321R; no more than one of SOCWK 355R/SDS 358R, SOCWK 357R/SDS 357R, SOCWK 390A, SOCWK 390B
Notes
- Students are encouraged to make note of course prerequisites and antirequisites and discuss their Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) plan and course progression with the SMF academic advisor, especially students in double majors and/or co-op.
- Students are expected to complete courses in research methods and statistics from their major plan. Students in double majors that require courses in research methods and statistics in both majors should consult with their academic advisors to discuss their course selection.
- No one course may fulfil more than one requirement within any SMF plan.
Arts and Business (Co-op and Regular)
Students may combine the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan with Arts and Business. In addition to the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies requirements, students must also complete the Arts and Business requirements.
Honours Double Majors
Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies may be taken in combination with most Arts majors in which an Honours major is offered or with many Honours majors in other faculties. For further information, see the double majors section of Available Arts Academic Plans.
Human Services Practicum Specialization
In combination with the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the Human Services Practicum Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:
- A minimum Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major average of 75%.
- Successful completion of four additional courses, for a total of 10.5 academic course units (20 courses) in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies:
Notes
- The Human Services Practicum Specialization is only open to students majoring in an Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan.
- SMF 490 and SMF 491 include both a weekly seminar component (three hours) and a weekly unpaid practicum placement (15 hours).
- Students may be required to compete against students from this and other institutions for placements; community agencies reserve the right to interview student candidates and select successful candidate(s) for the position(s).
- Students must achieve a cumulative major average of at least 75% in all SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses counted towards their Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major.
- Students who have completed courses towards this specialization but are not able to sustain the required 75% major average but are still eligible for Honours standing will normally be allowed to continue in the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major but without the specialization.
- Students may enrol in either the Human Services Practicum Specialization or the Intensive Research Specialization, but not both. However, students who choose the Human Services Practicum Specialization may also apply to enrol in the SMF thesis courses.
Intensive Research Specialization
In combination with the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the Intensive Research Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:
- A minimum Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major average of 75%.
- Successful completion of four additional courses, for a total of 10.5 academic course units (20 courses) in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies:

- The Intensive Research Specialization is only open to students majoring in an Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies academic plan.
- Students must achieve a cumulative major average of at least 75% in all SMF and Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies approved courses counted towards their Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major.
- Students who have completed courses towards this specialization but are not able to sustain the required 75% major average but are still eligible for Honours standing will normally be allowed to continue in the Honours Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies major but without the specialization.
- Students may enrol in either the Human Services Practicum Specialization or the Intensive Research Specialization, but not both.
