Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative minimum overall average of 60% and a cumulative minimum French major average of 70%.
Eligibility for graduation in the Honours French academic plan includes successful completion of the following requirements:
- Appropriate Program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
- French Studies Plan-level requirements:
- a minimum French major average of 70%
- at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in French, including:
- FR 192A, FR 192B, FR 250, FR 251, FR 252, FR 276, FR 296, FR 297, FR 303, FR 351, FR 452
- four literature or culture courses from FR 332, FR 332A, FR 332B, FR 343, FR 343A, FR 343B, FR 354, FR 354A, FR 354B, FR 363, FR 363A, FR 363B, FR 365, FR 367, FR 373, FR 375, FR 393A, FR 393B, FR 395A, FR 395B, FR 399A, FR 410, FR 424, FR 424A, FR 424B, FR 471, FR 473, FR 484, FR 485, FR 486, FR 487
- one additional FR course at the 300-level or above
Note
Francophone students and students who graduated from a French high school begin above FR 192A. Those students are still required to complete a minimum of 16 French courses above the FR 192A level.
Arts and Business (Co-op and Regular)
Students may combine the Honours French academic plan with Arts and Business. In addition to the Honours French requirements, students must also complete the Arts and Business requirements. Students pursuing Arts and Business may not enrol in the French Teaching Specialization.
Honours Double Majors
Honours French may be taken in combination with most Arts majors in which an Honours major is offered or with many Honours majors in other faculties. Students pursuing a double Honours may not enrol in the French Teaching Specialization. For further information, see the double majors section of Available Arts Academic Plans.
French Teaching Specialization
In combination with the Honours French plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the French Teaching Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:
- A minimum French major average of 75% (see Note 3).
- Successful completion of six additional courses, for a total of 11 academic course units (22 courses) in French or approved courses:
- Completion of a total of 160 hours of in-school volunteer experience under supervision of certified teachers, from Year Two to Year Four, inclusively.
- Students who do not already have native fluency in French are required to spend two consecutive terms (normally in Year Three) at one of the Department's French-speaking university partners: either the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (Canada) or the Université de Nantes (France).
Notes
- The French Teaching Specialization (FTS) is only open to students majoring in the Honours French academic plan. This specialization may not be taken in combination with any other major or Arts and Business.
- Students who graduate from the University of Waterloo with the French Teaching Specialization are guaranteed admission to a Bachelor of Education program at Nipissing University, according to the Waterloo-Nipissing FTS agreement. Students who choose not to attend Nipissing University will still receive the French Teaching Specialization designation.
- Students must achieve a cumulative major average of at least 75% in all French courses counted towards their Honours French major, including other courses listed in the specialization's requirements.
- Students who have completed courses towards this specialization but are not able to sustain the required 75% major average but are still eligible for Honours standing will normally be allowed to continue in the Honours French major but without the specialization.
- The education courses have prerequisites: PSYCH 101/PSYCH 101R for PSYCH 212/PSYCH 212R and SOC 101/SOC 101R for SOC 207.
- Students may enrol in either the French Teaching Specialization or the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization, but not both.
Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization
In combination with the Honours French plan-level requirements listed above, students interested in pursuing the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization will be required to fulfil the following requirements:
- A minimum French major average of 75%.
- Successful completion of four additional courses, for a total of 10 academic course units (20 courses) in French:
- four additional FR literature and culture courses at the 300-level or above from FR 332, FR 332A, FR 332B, FR 343, FR 343A, FR 343B, FR 354, FR 354A, FR 354B, FR 363, FR 363A, FR 363B, FR 365, FR 367, FR 373, FR 375, FR 393A, FR 393B, FR 395A, FR 395B, FR 399A, FR 410, FR 424, FR 424A, FR 424B, FR 471, FR 473, FR 484, FR 485, FR 486, FR 487 (see Note 2)
Notes
- The Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization is only open to students majoring in the Honours French academic plan.
- FR 3XX or 4XX transfer credits will be counted towards the Intensive French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures Specialization if they are transferred from one of the Department’s French-speaking university partners: either the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (Canada) or the Université de Nantes (France).
- Students must achieve a cumulative major average of at least 75% in all French courses counted towards their Honours French major.
