Chemistry

Honours Chemistry (Biobased Specialization)

Advisor: See Faculty of Science, academic advisors.

Biobased Chemistry spans the design of chemicals and materials from renewable resources via an integrated approach that combines the expertise of the chemist with the principles of green chemistry and resource management. This specialization provides students with the opportunity to acquire the scientific and professional skills required of chemists in this important and rapidly expanding domain.

This program is delivered in partnership with the University of Bordeaux, in France, and includes the option of studying at the University of Bordeaux in Year Four all term. Students interested in this option should consult with the program advisor and be aware that their overall average should be higher than 60%.

Continuing in this program requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative Chemistry average of 60%.

In order to graduate in Honours Chemistry (Biobased Chemistry Specialization), the following requirements must be successfully completed:
22.0 units that include:

Additional Program Condition:

A maximum of two failures in CHEM lecture courses is allowed. Failure in more than two CHEM lecture courses will result in the requirement to withdraw from this academic plan.

Notes

  1. CHEM 250L should be taken in Year Two fall if it counts as the 0.25 lab unit.
  2. CHEM 313L should be taken in Year Three winter if it counts as the 0.25 lab unit.
  3. CHEM 360L has a CHEM 360 corequisite.
  4. Students are encouraged to include an ethics course, such as STV 100, PHIL 110B, PHIL 215, or PHIL 221.
  5. Students should contact their program advisor for a list of recommended AMATH, CO, MATH, PMATH, and STAT courses.
  6. Students have the option of studying at the University of Waterloo or the University of Bordeaux during their Year Four fall term. Students should contact their academic advisor for information regarding permitted electives at each of these institutions.
