The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo is deeply committed to the belief that humankind's past is relevant to both its present and its future. The study of classical antiquity not only widens our historical horizons, but also deepens our understanding of modern life, language, and thought.
Especially at a time when traditional values are being re-examined, the Department of Classical Studies believes that it has something of importance to offer the modern student. Its objective is to introduce the student to the people, history, ideas, art, literature, mythology, and religion of the classical past. To achieve this aim, the Department offers academic plans both in the classical languages, Greek and Latin, and the study of ancient culture in translation, classical studies. These plans can easily be arranged to fit the needs and interests of each student.
The three- and four-year general majors in Classical Studies emphasize not only ancient literature, but also ancient history, art, and mythology, thereby aiming to provide the student with broad knowledge of the many facets of the ancient world. The plans do not require knowledge of the classical languages because all primary sources are read in translation.
