Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

Department of Kinesiology

Overview

The kinesiology plan encompasses the scientific study of human movement in order to optimize health and prevent illness and injury. The plan provides a foundation in anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, and neuroscience, complemented by biology, chemistry, and physics courses from the Faculty of Science. In keeping with an emphasis on applied and experiential learning, competence is developed through various laboratory courses, facilities, and assignments as well as advanced practicum courses in sports injury assessment, cardiac rehabilitation, and movement assessment. With one of the largest departments of kinesiology in North America, students also have the unique opportunity to take specialized kinesiology electives, and distinguish themselves with expertise in areas such as gait analysis, altitude and aerospace physiology, motor learning, or low back disorders.

Students can further enhance their undergraduate studies in kinesiology by complementing their major with one of the following minors offered by the Department of Kinesiology:

  • Minor in Medical Physiology
  • Ergonomics and Injury Prevention Minor
  • Human Nutrition Minor
  • Rehabilitation Sciences Minor

A student's academic plan may also be tailored to individual interests in other disciplines by selecting elective courses from other departments at the University, and by using these courses to complete a complementary option or minor (e.g., chemistry, biology, gerontology, management science).

Kinesiology graduands enjoy career success in areas such as rehabilitation, ergonomics, and fitness/exercise management, while others pursue further specialization in graduate programs or professional schools (e.g., medicine, physiotherapy, chiropractic, and occupational therapy).
