German - Overview

German Studies in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies offers courses in the humanities and the social sciences, as well as in language and culture, taught in English, German, and/or Dutch. Our department at the University of Waterloo is one of the largest in Canada in terms of the number of faculty members in German studies, allowing us to offer a wide range of courses in different subjects: elementary to advanced language courses, culture, film, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. Some of these courses are offered online to fit your schedule.

Students enrolled in our program, whatever their major, are encouraged to take advantage of our international exchange opportunities, allowing them to study and/or work in German-speaking countries for periods lasting from a few weeks to an entire year.

Our graduates typically pursue careers in business, finance, government, and higher education. We invite you to visit the Germanic and Slavic Studies website for more information, including alumni profiles.
