French Studies/Études Françaises

Honours French - French Teaching Specialization

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 70% and a cumulative French major average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours French - French Teaching Specialization academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate Program-level requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
  2. French Studies Plan-level requirements:
    • at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • one of FR 192A, 192B
      • FR 197297
      • one of FR 263, 276
      • four language courses from FR 300A, 351353, 355, 400, 452 
      • one linguistics course from FR 303, 373, 403, 409
      • four literature or culture courses at the 300-level or above
      • one additional FR course at the 300-level or above
      • Education courses:
      • Students who do not already have native fluency in French are required to spend two consecutive terms (normally in Year Three) at a French-speaking university.
        • Students opting to study in France must include FR 473 in their plan.

Students graduate with an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree awarded by Nipissing University.

Notes:

  1. Students who wish to major in French are strongly urged to take an appropriate first-year level French language course in addition to FR 197.
  2. The Education courses have prerequisites: PSYCH 101/121R for PSYCH 212/212R and SOC 101 or 120R for SOC 207.
  3. Students are required to complete a total of 160 hours of in-school volunteer experience under supervision of certified teachers, from Year Two to Year Four, inclusively.
  4. This is a consecutive BA/BEd program. In order to graduate with a French Teaching Specialization degree, students must complete all requirements prior to graduating from the University of Waterloo at the end of Year Four and from Nipissing University at the end of Year Five.
