Entrance Scholarships and Awards

Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering offers many scholarships each year to outstanding students entering Year One of an Engineering program.  Entrance scholarships are awarded on the basis of secondary school performance and extensive involvement in extracurricular activities as assessed through the Admission Information Form.  An application is not required.

Elizabeth Alarie Memorial Scholarship

This entrance scholarship has been established by family and friends in memory of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Alarie. One or more annual scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, will be given to first-year undergraduate students in the School of Architecture who have demonstrated strong academic/artistic performance and who have resided in the Region of Waterloo for at least five years prior to applying to Waterloo; a preference will be given to students from Wilmot Township. 

Marjorie Barber Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding female student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering. This fund is made possible by a donation from Mrs. Marjorie Barber to honour the memory of her husband, Dr. Albert Sherwood Barber, P. Eng., LL.D.  “Bert” Barber played a major role in paving the way for the promotion and advancement of co-operative education in Canada and is widely recognized as the “Father of co-operative education in Canada”.  Mrs. Barber also established this award in order to promote Engineering as a viable career for women who are entering university. To honour her memory, an additional donation was made by Marjorie Barber's family, following her passing in 2011.

David R. Bertran Entrance Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

One scholarship, valued at up to $3,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of Chemical Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from David R. Bertran who, after a career in the U.S. petroleum and chemical industries, wants to reward and encourage bright, young students entering the Chemical Engineering program at Waterloo where he received Bachelors and Masters degrees.

W. J. Beynon Memorial Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering and who is a resident of the County of Lambton in the Province of Ontario. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Beynon Family in honour of W.J. Beynon.

Dr. Sidney Blair Scholarship in Geological Engineering

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of Geological Engineering. Dr. Sidney Blair was a prominent Canadian geologist who was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Waterloo. This fund is made possible  by a donation from his estate.

CAE Inc. Scholarship in Mechatronics Engineering

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are awarded annually to provide assistance to outstanding undergraduate first-year students entering Mechatronics Engineering.

Canadian General-Tower Scholarships in the Environment

Three scholarships, valued at up to $1,500 each, have been established by Canadian General-Tower Ltd., to encourage academic excellence, attract outstanding students, and to enhance the University's programs related to the environment. The scholarships are made annually to outstanding students entering Year One in each of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and one of Environment and Resource Studies, Geography and Environmental Management, or Planning in the Faculty of Environment.

Chachra Family Entrance Scholarships

Two scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Fakir and Saroj Chachra who strongly value and encourage higher education.  This fund also honours their nephew, Akhil Katarya, who received his BASc in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2004.

Chandrashekar/Shad Valley Memorial Engineering Entrance Scholarship

The late Professor Chandrashekar, former Chair of Systems Design Engineering and a strong supporter of the Shad Valley Summer Program, left a bequest to the Faculty of Engineering, part of which funds an annual entrance scholarship. With an additional contribution from Shad International, the scholarship has a total value of $3,500. The scholarship is presented to an outstanding first-year Engineering or Software Engineering student who has participated in the Shad Valley Program. The award is based on both academic excellence and extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

Arthur F. Church Mechanical Engineering Scholarships

Two entrance scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are presented annually to outstanding students who have exceptional academic and extracurricular records and are entering the first year of Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering. These awards are made possible by a donation from Mr. Arthur Church, BASc '76 Mechanical Engineering.

Class of 1986 Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering, on the basis of academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular and leadership activities, as assessed through the Admission Information Form (AIF). This fund is made possible by a donation from an alumnus of the Engineering Class of 1986.

CN Entrance Scholarships in Engineering

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students entering first year of Civil Engineering. This fund is made possible by a donation from Canadian National Railway Company (CN) to encourage the study of transportation and railway engineering.

Conestoga-Rovers & Associates Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students entering first year of Civil Engineering and to students interested in pursuing a major in Earth Sciences in the Faculty of Science. These scholarships are made possible by a generous donation from three founders of Conestoga-Rovers & Associates: Don Haycock, Frank Rovers, and Ron Schwark.

B.P. Dammizio Computer Science Entrance Scholarship

Several scholarships, valued at up to $4,000 each, will be awarded to outstanding students entering first year of Computer Science, Software Engineering or Computer Engineering who come from the Niagara Region.  This fund was established in 2006 by Bruno P. Dammizio (BMath 1980) to encourage and assist students from the Niagara Region who are interested in the pursuit of technological innovation and committed to achieving the very highest standards of excellence

Engineering International Student Scholarship/Grant

International students admitted to full-time, first-year studies in Architecture, Engineering, and Software Engineering who are studying in Canada on an international study permit, will be awarded the Engineering International Student Scholarship/Grant valued at up to $20,000 over eight academic terms.  In Year One students will receive the Engineering International Student Scholarship, consisting of $2,500 in each of the first and second academic terms (1A and 1B). Beginning in Year Two, students will receive the Engineering International Student Grant valued at $2,500 per academic study term for up to six terms. Both the Scholarship and Grant are restricted to students who have been assessed international study permit tuition fees. All payments are subject to full-time enrolment in degree studies in the Faculty of Engineering or Software Engineering and to academic promotion each term.

English Language Proficiency Prize

Prizes of $100 each are awarded to students from Engineering who achieve the highest scores on the English Language Proficiency test.

Faculty of Engineering Entrance Scholarships

Approximately 100 non-renewable entrance scholarships, valued at up to $3,500 each, are awarded to outstanding students admitted to a program in the Faculty of Engineering (excluding Architecture and Software Engineering) on the basis of secondary school performance and extensive involvement in extracurricular activities as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

Isabel Farrar Entrance Scholarships

In 2006, Deanne Farrar (BMath 1988) and Sean Capstick (BASC 1989) established a fund for outstanding first-year undergraduate female students entering the Faculty of Mathematics and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. The scholarships were created in honour of Ms. Farrar's mother, Isabel Farrar who was a Mathematics teacher and who played an instrumental role in encouraging her daughter and other young women to study Mathematics. Several scholarships, valued at up to $4,000 each, will be awarded to outstanding students based on a combination of high school admission marks, results of the Euclid Mathematics Contest (Mathematics students only), and extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

Fred Groch Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Fred Groch.

Sir Casimir Gzowski Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Civil Engineering program. This fund is made possible by a donation from the late Barbara (Gzowski) Warwick in honour of her great grandfather, Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski, whom she greatly admired for his leadership in the discipline of civil engineering and contributions to major infrastructure projects in Ontario and Canada.

John Hamel Memorial Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of Electrical Engineering. This fund was established by friends of Dr. John Hamel, and by Dr. Otman Basir, to honour their late friend and colleague, John Hamel. Dr. Hamel achieved his Masters and PhD degrees from Waterloo and went to teach at schools in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In 2000 he returned to Waterloo where he was a dedicated researcher and teacher in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering until his death in 2009.

Hatch Entrance Scholarship

Up to three scholarships, valued at up to $4,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students entering first year in Chemical, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Hatch.  Hatch is a leading global consulting, engineering, technologies, information systems, and project and construction management organization interested in investing in the future of engineering education.

Colonel Hugh Heasley Engineering Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at up to $10,000 over four academic years, are presented annually to outstanding students entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering. The scholarships are funded by an endowment established by the estate of the late Colonel Heasley. Recipients will receive $4,000 in Year One with renewal payments of $1,000 per term beginning in Year Two provided an average of 80% is maintained.

Robert Kerr Scholarships

This fund provides for three entrance scholarships in the Faculty of Arts and one entrance scholarship that will alternate annually between the School of Architecture and the School of Planning. Valued at $2,500 - $3,500, these scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students entering first year studies at the University of Waterloo.

Leslie Klein Engineering Entrance Scholarships

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $3,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering or Software Engineering. This fund is made possible by a donation from Dr. Leslie Klein, PhD, P.Eng and an alumnus of the Faculty of Engineering.

Paul and Suzanne Koenderman Entrance Scholarship in Engineering

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering, with preference for a female recipient. This fund is made possible by a donation from Waterloo graduates Paul Koenderman, BASc, Mechanical Engineering and Suzanne Koenderman, BA, English. 

Jacques Lamarre Scholarship in Civil Engineering

A scholarship, valued at $5,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Civil Engineering program. Established by SNC-Lavalin, this scholarship honours Dr. Jacques Lamarre, who served the company for 42 years and as its President and CEO for the last 13. The award reflects his exceptional contributions to the engineering profession through leadership and innovation, and his commitment to young students through the support of postsecondary education. It also reflects Waterloo Engineering’s long standing relationship with SNC-Lavalin and Dr. Lamarre, a distinguished alumnus of the University.

Richard and Elizabeth Madter Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at up to $3,500 each, are presented annually to outstanding students entering Year One of Electrical or Computer Engineering.

Peter C. Masak Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $4,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of Mechanical Engineering. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Masak family in memory of Peter. C. Masak.

McPhie Family Architecture Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of Architecture Studies.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Douglas and Kathleen McPhie. 

Microsoft Women in Technology Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, will be awarded to outstanding female students entering first year of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, Management Science Engineering, Systems Design Engineering or Software Engineering. This fund was established in 2006 by female alumni who work at Microsoft Corporation to encourage and assist female students who are interested in the pursuit of an education and career in a technological field and who are committed to achieving the very highest standards of excellence.

Motorola Engineering Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of Computer or Electrical Engineering. This award is made possible from an endowment fund established by Motorola Canada Limited.

Nortel Networks Undergraduate Scholarships

Scholarships, valued at up to $3,500 each, are awarded to outstanding students entering Year One of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Software Engineering.

NOVA Chemicals Entrance Scholarships

Two scholarships, valued at up to $1,000 each, are awarded annually: one to a student entering first year of the Physical Sciences program in the Faculty of Science and one to a student entering first year of Chemical Engineering. These scholarships are made possible through a donation from NOVA Chemicals Corporation in recognition of their long standing relationship with the University of Waterloo through co-op and graduate hires from the Faculties of Science and Engineering.

Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation Entrance Scholarship

The Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education provides two entrance scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, to outstanding students who are entering first year of an Engineering program. One scholarship will be awarded to a female student and one to a male student.

Carl A. Pollock Engineering Scholarship

Several scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are presented annually to outstanding students entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering or Software Engineering. The scholarships are awarded in conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering Entrance Scholarship program with special emphasis on extracurricular activities.

RealNetworks, Inc. Entrance Scholarship for Women in Technology and Business

One of more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, will be awarded to outstanding female students entering first year of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Management Engineering, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Design Engineering or Software Engineering.  This fund was established in 2007 by RealNetworks, Inc. to motivate female students to pursue an education and a career in technology or business.

Scotiabank Software Engineering Entrance Scholarship

One entrance scholarship, valued at up to $20,000 over eight academic terms, is awarded annually to an undergraduate student entering Year One of Software Engineering. Selection is based on secondary school academic performance and on extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form. An application is not required. It is strongly recommended that applicants write the Euclid Mathematics Contest.

Adel S. Sedra Entrance Scholarship

A fund has been established by Adel S. Sedra, Dean of Engineering, to provide scholarships, valued at up to $1,500 each, to outstanding undergraduate students entering Year One of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Harold Seegmiller Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $1,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students entering first year of Civil Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Harold E. Seegmiller.

Shell Canada Engineering Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $3,500, is given to an outstanding student entering Year One in the Faculty of Engineering from an endowment provided by Shell Canada.

Sherbourne - Roorda Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $1,500, will provide assistance to an outstanding undergraduate student entering the first year of Civil, Environmental, or Geological Engineering. 

Lucas Skoczkowski-Wong Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,200, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of Electrical Engineering.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Lucas Skoczkowski-Wong.

Software Engineering Entrance Scholarships

Several entrance scholarships are available to outstanding students entering Year One of Software Engineering. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of secondary school performance and on extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

Paul B. Spafford Entrance Scholarships

Two scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 each, are awarded to outstanding undergraduate first-year students entering Nanotechnology Engineering.  This fund has been established by Paul B. Spafford.

Sullivan Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering first year in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science from Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School, Brantford, Ontario. Preference will be given to students entering Engineering.

Suncor Emerging Leaders Awards

Four or more scholarships, valued at up to $10,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students in Engineering and Science programs: three to students entering first year in Chemical, Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering and one to a student entering first year of the Science and Business program or second year of an Earth Sciences program. The scholarships are payable over four years for all programs, except Earth Sciences, where they are payable over the last three years of the program. These scholarships are funded by a generous donation from Suncor in recognition of the outstanding programs at the University of Waterloo and to meet the needs of the Canadian oil and gas industry through trained human resources capable of playing a leadership role in the sector.

University of Waterloo Alumni@IBM Engineering Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $3,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year in the Faculty of Engineering or the Software Engineering program. This fund is made possible by personal donations from University of Waterloo Engineering alumni employed or retired from IBM.

University of Waterloo Alumni@Microsoft Engineering Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,000 or more, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of a program in the Faculty of Engineering. This fund is made possible through donations from University of Waterloo alumni employed with Microsoft Corporation.

University of Waterloo Alumni@Nortel Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of a program in the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Mathematics. This fund was established by University of Waterloo alumni employed at Nortel.

University of Waterloo/FIRST Mechatronics Engineering Scholarship

In partnership with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the Departments of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering, the University of Waterloo is pleased to award one $5,000 non-renewable entrance scholarship. The scholarship is to recognize and reward students whose experience with FIRST has inspired an interest in pursuing an engineering education. The scholarship is presented annually to an outstanding student entering first year of the Mechatronics Engineering program at the University of Waterloo who was active on a FIRST team in the final year of high school. Selection is based on academic excellence and extracurricular achievement as assessed through the Admission Information Form (AIF). Students are asked to emphasize their participation on a FIRST team in the AIF. More information on FIRST is accessible at www.usfirst.org.

WalterFedy Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $1,500 each, are award annually to outstanding first-year students: one to a student entering Chemical, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and one to a student entering the Architecture program.  This fund is made possible by a donation from WalterFedy and is consistent with their long relationship with the University of Waterloo including the hiring of co-op students and graduates.

George A. Ward Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year of the Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering program.  This fund is made possible by a donation from George Ward.

WatPD-Engineering Entrance Scholarships

The WatPD-Engineering program provides Waterloo Engineering students with background knowledge to help them effectively learn and develop professional workplace skills during their co-op work terms. Eleven non-renewable entrance scholarships, valued at up to $3,500 each, acknowledge the Faculty of Engineering’s commitment to the goals of the WatPD-Engineering program. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding students admitted to each program in the Faculty of Engineering (excluding Architecture and Software Engineering) who demonstrate academic excellence in their high school performance and the potential to thrive in professional skill development as assessed through the Admission Information Form.
