English Language Proficiency Requirement

All students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering are required to complete the English Language Proficiency Exam requirement (ELPE). The exact detail is slightly different for the Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) and Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) students and the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) students. The table below summarizes these differences.

Before taking the ELPE for a second time the student must participate in either the ELPE review at the Writing Centre or the more complete sessions at the Writing Centre. In addition, students are encouraged to review the ELPE preparation material on-line prior to taking the ELPE.

Recovery alternatives  Writing Centre or a grade of 60 in one of:  ENGL 109, ENGL 129R, ENGL 210E, ENGL 210F, ESL 102R or ESL 129R.  (Courses used to recover from ELPE failures cannot be used as CSE courses)

Note

Students who arrange a special sitting of the ELPE outside the scheduled dates will be assessed an administrative charge.
