Upper-Year Bursaries and Awards

Faculty of Engineering

3M Canada Inc. Bursaries

Four bursaries, valued at $500 each, are awarded as follows: one to an Engineering student and the remaining three to students in either Business, Science, or Computer Science-related fields.

Hira and Kamal Ahuja Engineering Award

One award, valued at up to $2,000, is presented annually to an outstanding student entering an upper year in the Faculty of Engineering who has a strong academic record and has a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate a significant cultural contribution to the East Indian community. Eligible students must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. This award is made possible through donations from Epic Educational Program Innovations Center Inc.  An application is required by May 31.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) - Northern Alberta Student Award

One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $1,000 each, are available to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in first-, second-, third-, or fourth-year in the Department of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated service to the community and student section involvement in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME). Candidates must be able to demonstrate a financial need and have a minimum overall average of 70% and have resided in Ontario for twelve months prior to beginning their post-secondary education.

Alfred Armbrust Memorial Bursary

Several bursaries, of varying amounts are awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering who are experiencing financial difficulties.

Donald J. Batty Memorial Fund

One or more bursaries, valued at up to $1,200 are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in year Two, Three and Four in the Faculty of Engineering, with preference to students enrolled in Civil engineering who may have an interest in structural engineering and/or construction materials, who have demonstrated financial need and have achieved a minimum overall average of 75%.  This fund is made possible by a donation from the family and friends of the late Donald J. Batty who was a Civil Engineer involved in the early construction of the University of Waterloo.  The Batty family wishes to commemorate Donald Batty's professional achievements as an engineer by helping engineering students who have good academic standing and who require financial assistance. 

Andy (Andreas) Baumgaertner Memorial Bursary

A bursary fund has been established in memory of Andy (Andreas) Baumgaertner to provide financial assistance to Systems Design Engineering students who have proven financial need. Bursaries will be awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in third- or fourth-year who have a minimum overall B average.  Eligible students must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education.

John Bergsma Award In Engineering

An annual award, valued at $1,000, has been established by Dr. John Bergsma for full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering. To qualify, candidates must have a minimum B average and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced by involvement in extracurricular activities at the University. Interested students should apply by the end of the first month of registration for each term. Eligible students must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning their post-secondary education.

Conestoga Heavy Construction Association Award

One or more awards, valued at $500 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in the Civil Engineering program who have a demonstrated financial need and who have achieved a minimum overall average of 75%. 

Cooper Standard Automotive Award

Three awards, valued at up to $1,500 each, have been established by Cooper Standard Automotive, to recognize academic performance, demonstrated leadership abilities, and financial need among students in the Faculty of Engineering. Full-time students in Year One or above who have achieved an overall average of 75% or greater and who have a demonstrated financial need are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students studying in the Chemical, Mechanical, or Systems Design Engineering programs and to students who live in or come from the areas of: Perth County, Huron County, or the Regional Municipality of Halton. Students who have an interest in manufacturing and/or process engineering as they relate to the automotive industry are encouraged to apply. 

R. Bruce Dymond Memorial Bursary

A bursary fund has been established in memory of R. Bruce Dymond to assist students in the Faculty of Engineering.

Emco Limited Bursary

Emco Limited has established a bursary program to assist upper-year students in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

Enbridge Gas Distribution Award

Two awards, valued at up to $2,500 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four of Chemical or Civil Engineering who have financial need and a minimum cumulative average of 70%. Eligible students must have lived in Ontario during the entire 12 month period preceding their post-secondary studies. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated leadership ability as shown through on-campus or community extra-curricular activities.

Engineering Undergraduate Student Opportunity Award

Several awards are provided annually to support academically qualified students experiencing financial difficulties. The fund is made possible by donations from interested donors and by a matching grant from the Province of Ontario. Eligible students must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to beginning their post secondary education.

Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. Student Opportunity Fund

Several awards, valued up to $2,000 each, have been established by Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. to assist full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering who have a minimum 75% average and are experiencing financial difficulty. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced by their involvement in extracurricular activities either at the University or in the community. Eligible students must have resided in Ontario for 12 months prior to the beginning of their post-secondary education. 

Kothari Family Upper Year Award

One award, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four in the Faculty of Engineering, who has achieved a minimum overall average of 75% and who has a demonstrated financial need. 

Alan W. Shattuck Memorial Bursaries

Several bursaries, valued at $500 each, are awarded annually on the basis of academic standing and financial need to students in third- or fourth-year Civil Engineering. The funds were made available by associates of Mr. Shattuck in recognition of his contribution in both pollution and water control resources.  

Shamoun Sufer Memorial Engineering Award

An award, valued at $1,000, is provided annually to an undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three or Four in the Faculty of Engineering who has achieved a minimum overall average of 75% and who has a demonstrated financial need.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Davin Sufer, BASc ’04, in memory of his father, Shamoun Sufer.

Wescast Industries Continuous Learning Award

An annual award, valued at $1,000, has been established by Wescast Industries Ltd., to recognize academic performance and financial need among students in Accounting and Engineering. To be eligible, candidates must have maintained a 75% minimum overall average.

Selim Yousef Memorial Bursary

A bursary fund has been established in memory of Selim Yousef to be used in providing bursary assistance to Mechanical Engineering students of good academic standing who demonstrate financial need.
