Entrance Scholarships and Awards

General - Open to Students in All Faculties

Mary N. Bales Entrance Scholarships

One or more scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students admitted to first year of an undergraduate program in any Faculty at the University of Waterloo. This fund was established in 2004 by Mary Bales, MA English 1972 and M Phil 1973 and 2002 recipient of the Arts Alumni Achievement Award.

BMO Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, will be awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year at the University of Waterloo, St. Jerome's University, or Renison University College. This fund is made possible by a donation from the Bank of Montreal. It is BMO's desire to make continuous learning a reality for everyone by creating opportunity for students at all levels and in every stage of life. 

James and Elise Devitt Entrance Scholarship

Two scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year in any faculty or program.  This fund is made possible by a donation from Elise Devitt, Waterloo retired staff member, in memory of her husband, T. James Devitt.

Chik Mo-Fai Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at $1,500 - $3,000 each, are awarded annually to undergraduate students from China entering first year of any program at the University of Waterloo. Preference will be given to students who have graduated from Ying Wa College in Hong Kong. This fund is made possible by a donation from Rex Auyeung, a 1977 graduate of Environmental Studies. Rex is honouring his late father-in-law Chik Mo-Fai and his "drive" to move up in his career. Rex respected this and he hopes this “drive” will send a strong signal to students to study hard. As long as students are willing to study and have the desire to be successful, this scholarship is intended to relieve some of their financial burden, allow them to concentrate on their studies, and eventually contribute back to society at large.

Lan Wong Chu Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student from China or Hong Kong entering first year of any program at the University of Waterloo.  This fund is made possible by a donation from the Chu family in honour of their grandmother/great-grandmother, Lan Wong Chu, who was known for her strength, kindness, and integrity.

Hong Kong Alumni Association Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $1,000, is made available each year through donations from University of Waterloo alumni living in Hong Kong. Outstanding students who currently reside in or who previously resided in Hong Kong and who are entering full-time studies at the University of Waterloo are eligible to apply, provided they are willing to pledge to return to Hong Kong after graduation. The scholarship is not based on academic excellence alone; other factors such as personality, initiative, and community involvement will also be considered. Interested students must submit an application, available on the Prospective Student Website at www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/financing/scholarships.php, by May 1st.

J.T. Associates Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering first year at the University of Waterloo who is a graduate of the Pathways to Education program.  This fund is made possible by a donation from J.T. Associates Inc.

Dominic Leung Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $2000, is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student from Hong Kong or China enrolled in Year One of any degree program at the University of Waterloo on the basis of academic achievement. This fund was established by Dominic Leung, a proud alumnus of the Faculty of Arts, to assist young students to fulfill their dreams of obtaining an education from the University of Waterloo.

Magnum Centennial Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at up to $2,500, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering Year One of a University of Waterloo program. No application is required. This fund is made possible through donations received from the former Wean Canada Ltd. Company in honour of Canada's Centennial in 1967.

Project Hero Award

Project Hero was co-founded by Retired General Rick Hillier and Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Reed to provide support to the sons and daughters of Canadian military killed while serving in an active mission. The University of Waterloo is proud to participate in Project Hero by providing eligible dependents with award funding to cover tuition for up to four academic years and on-campus residence and meal plan fees for the first year of study. Eligible students who have been admitted to the University of Waterloo must submit an application, available on the Prospective Student Website at www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/financing/scholarships.php, by June 15th.

Purdy Crawford Undergraduate Scholarships

An endowment fund has been established by Purdy Crawford, a former member of the University’s Board of Governors. Two or more scholarships, valued at $4,000 each, will be awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year in any program at the University of Waterloo. This fund actively demonstrates Mr. Crawford's passion for learning and his dynamic support for the advancement of education.

Serbian Education Entrance Award

An award, valued at $1,000, is granted annually to a student entering first year at the University of Waterloo. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate a significant cultural contribution to the Serbian community. Interested students should submit an application by April 15th. This fund is made possible through donations from friends of the Serbian community to encourage post-secondary education and academic excellence.

Shad Valley Alumni Entrance Scholarships

Several scholarships, ranging in value from $1,000 - $5,000, are available to Shad Valley alumni who are entering first year of an undergraduate program in any Faculty at the University of Waterloo. Values and selection criterion vary by Faculty. Interested students must complete the University of Waterloo Scholarship Application Notification Form on the Shad Valley website at www.shad.ca/UWScholarshipForm by March 31st.

Alexander Steele Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at up to $1,000, may be awarded annually to an outstanding first-year student who is a graduate of Orangeville District Secondary School. Preference will be given to students entering a program in the Faculty of Mathematics and to students entering the Faculty of Arts who report an interest in pursuing a degree in English. This fund is made possible by a donation from The Norman Stuart Robertson Estate in honour and memory of N.S. Robertson’s principal, the late Alexander Steel, of Orangeville District Secondary School in Ontario.

University of Waterloo Alumni Scholarships

Several entrance scholarships, valued at up to $5,000 over four years, are provided from an endowment fund established by Alumni. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding students entering each Faculty. The criteria for awarding and renewing these scholarships will be determined by the awarding Faculty.

UW Alumni@Microsoft Scholarship

A scholarship, valued at $1,000 or more, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering first year of a program in the Faculties of Applied Health Sciences, Arts, Environment or Science, or in the Software Engineering program. This fund is made possible through donations from Waterloo alumni employed with Microsoft Corporation.

UW – China Hong Kong Entrance Scholarship

One scholarship, valued at $2,000, is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering any first-year program who currently lives in or who has previously lived in Hong Kong or mainland China and who intends to return to Hong Kong or China after graduation.  Selection will be based on academic excellence as well as character, initiative, and community involvement.  This fund is made possible by generous donations from alumni and friends of the University of Waterloo who live in Hong Kong and China.  Interested students are invited to submit an application by May 1st.

UW International Student Entrance Scholarship

Twenty scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding international students admitted to Year One of an undergraduate degree program.  International students admitted with an admission average of 90% or above will be considered.  Selection will be based on academic achievement combined with any other Faculty-specific entrance scholarship criteria.  An application is not required.

University of Waterloo Retirees’ Scholarship

Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students entering first year of any University of Waterloo program.  This fund is made possible by the support of University of Waterloo retirees.

University of Waterloo Scholarship Fund

Scholarships of varying amounts are awarded, as funds permit, to outstanding students entering Year One of any University of Waterloo program. This fund has been established through the generous donations of friends of the University of Waterloo.

Loran Award Series

Loran Awards

Loran Awards are granted by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation to outstanding students entering participating universities.  The awards are based on academic standing, evidence of moral force of character, capacity to lead and to motivate fellow students, extracurricular attainments, and evidence of a strong commitment to the community, both within and outside the school. Awards are valued at up to $4,000 per term and are renewable for up to three years. Students may apply on their own or be nominated by their high school. Further information can be obtained from your high school guidance office or from the Foundation's website at www.loranaward.ca . Inquiries should be made in September in order to meet the Fall deadlines.

University of Waterloo – Loran Award

The University of Waterloo will provide national Loran scholars with a tuition award up to a maximum of $4,000 per term.  This scholarship is renewable for up to three years.

Wiegand Foundation/Loran Award

The Wiegand Foundation supports the goals of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation and joins the University of Waterloo in recognizing national Loran scholars. A national winner of a Loran Award entering Year One as a full-time student in a degree program at the University of Waterloo is awarded the Wiegand Foundation/Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation Scholarship in Year One. This award consists of a tuition scholarship up to a maximum of $4,000. Those who renew the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation Award in Years Two, Three, and Four will receive the University of Waterloo – Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation Scholarship.

Wiegand Foundation Scholarships

A number of scholarships, valued at $500 to $1,000 each, may be awarded to those receiving Honours Citations and Provincial or Regional Loran Award winners attending the University of Waterloo. Selection of the winners occurs in the Winter term of each year. No application is necessary.

Waterloo County Series

University of Waterloo – Waterloo County Entrance Scholarships

The University of Waterloo is pleased to offer several scholarships to outstanding students entering the University from eligible secondary schools in the Region of Waterloo. These scholarships are funded in part by the Ford S. Kumpf Endowment Fund, the Gladys and Norman Raiter Memorial Endowment Fund, the Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Snider Memorial Endowment Fund, and the Waterloo County Entrance Scholarship Endowment Fund. The scholarships are valued at up to $4,000 payable over two years.

Walter A. Bean Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation Scholarship

One or more scholarships, valued at up to $2,000 each, are awarded to University of Waterloo – Waterloo County Entrance Scholarship recipients who have achieved high academic standing combined with outstanding leadership and good citizenship through involvement in extracurricular activities within the school or community. These scholarships honour the late Walter A. Bean, LLD, a distinguished friend of the University and business and community leader in Kitchener-Waterloo for several decades.

Ross & Doris Dixon Waterloo Region Entrance Scholarship

Two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, will be awarded to outstanding students entering the University of Waterloo from the secondary schools in the Region of Waterloo. These scholarships are made possible by donations from the late Ross & Doris Dixon, friends of the University.

Joseph H. Lang Scholarship

A $5,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student entering Year One; $3,000 is payable in Year One and $2,000 in Year Two provided the recipient achieves an overall average of 80%. Preference is given to those who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and who attended an eligible secondary school in the Region of Waterloo. The scholarship honours the Lang family which operated one of the largest and most important businesses in the Waterloo region for 130 years.

Waterloo-Wellington Science & Engineering Fair Scholarship

Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded to the senior gold medal winners of the Waterloo-Wellington Science & Engineering Fair competition who enrol in first-year studies in any undergraduate program at the University of Waterloo.

Women of Waterloo County Scholarship

An annual scholarship, valued at $1,500, has been established by the Canadian Federation of University Women, Kitchener-Waterloo, to recognize and encourage leadership among students from the Region of Waterloo. Recipients of a University of Waterloo - Waterloo County Entrance Entrance Scholarship or the Joseph H. Lang Scholarship will be invited to apply. Preference will be given to female students. Funding for this scholarship comes from proceeds from the sale of Women of Waterloo County, a book highlighting the achievements of local women.
