Honours Spanish (Arts and Business Co-op and Regular)
A student may combine Honours Spanish with Arts and Business. The requirements in Spanish are identical to the Joint Honours requirements listed below, except that the minimum number of required academic course units is 20. See Arts and Business for the Arts and Business requirements.
Joint Honours Spanish
A Joint Honours academic plan with Spanish may be taken in combination with most Arts disciplines in which an Honours academic plan is offered or with many Honours majors in other Faculties. See the department for the most recent list of approved combinations.

Spanish Minor

- No more than one unit of SPAN courses taught in the English language may be counted toward the Minor in Spanish.

Diploma in Spanish/English Translation
The Diploma in Spanish/English Translation is intended for non-degree or post-degree students wishing to develop strong language and translation skills in Spanish. It provides an opportunity to examine a variety of linguistic and stylistic issues directly relevant to understanding culture, civilization, business and industry. Students will be introduced to current issues of translation (business, technical, literary), while acquiring important research skills. Students will also be introduced to technological resources used today in translation and will consider various new avenues, such as software localization, where specific translation skills are in demand.
This Diploma is especially suitable for those seeking careers in businesses operating in Spanish speaking countries, in government and development bodies, in church-based agencies, or in other organizations active in the Hispanic world.
Courses offered by the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies deal with both the Spanish language and civilizations. Civilization courses are taught in English.
Requirements:
- The Diploma in Spanish/English Translation requires the successful completion of five academic course units (as specified below) with an overall cumulative average of at least 75% as well as the successful completion of a final examination in Spanish/English translation. Entry to the Diploma requires the approval of the Director of the Translation academic plan.
- The five academic course units (ten courses) of the Diploma are to include:
Spanish/English Translation Option
Students in any Honours or Four-Year General academic plan, other than Spanish, in any faculty of the university, may pursue the Spanish/English Translation Option.
Requirements are identical to the Diploma in Spanish/English Translation.
Specialization in Spanish/English Translation
The Specialization in Spanish/English Translation is designed for students who wish to explore a specific area of second language acquisition. Open to students majoring in Honours Spanish or Four-Year General Spanish.
Students will be introduced to current issues of translation (business, technical, literary), while acquiring important research skills.Students will also be introduced to technological resources used today in translation and will consider various new avenues, such as software localization, where specific translation skills are in demand.

Notes for the Spanish/English Translation Plans
- The final examination will be administered after successful completion of all required courses. The required passing grade is 75%.
- Please note that ENGL 306A will be required only during those years when SPAN 445 is not available. Please discuss with the Director of the academic plan.
- Some of the courses are offered in alternate years or may be taken in sequence. A minimum of two academic years are required to complete any of the translation academic plans.
- Students enrolled in any of the translation academic plans may choose to spend one semester in a School of Translation in a university in Latin America or Spain.
- Post-degree students with a BA in Spanish or a Minor in Spanish may count up to half of the required courses from the previous degree toward the completion of the selected academic plan in Translation.
Notes For All Spanish Plans
- By agreement, students at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University can be expected to take courses in Spanish at either university. While most language courses are taught concurrently every year at both universities, most other courses are taught either at one university or the other, and a few courses may rotate from year to year.
- With the permission of the Department, students may spend the third year enrolled in an acceptable university in Spain or Latin America.
- Students in Years Three and Four must have the permission of the home department to enrol in Spanish courses at the 100- or 200-level.
