Arts Departmental Academic Plans

Management Studies

Management Studies - Overview

Good management must be based increasingly on research and knowledge rather than intuition and experience. Hence, the Management Studies academic plans are designed to provide the theoretical background relevant to current management practice, and thus should be useful in many entry-level management jobs, and as a basis for further education in management.

Management Studies Minor

The Management Studies Minor can be taken in conjunction with many existing Honours Majors or Four-Year General Major academic plans in Arts or Honours academic plans in other faculties. (See Requirements below.)

Management Studies Option

The Management Studies Option is open to students in Three-Year General (Major or Non-major) and Four-Year General Non-major academic plans in Arts. (See Requirements below.)

Management Studies Diploma

The Management Studies diploma is open to non-degree or post-degree students. (See Requirements below.)

Requirements for the Management Studies Minor, Option, or Diploma

The Management Studies Minor, Option, and Diploma require successful completion of a minimum of five academic course units (ten courses) with a minimum cumulative average of 70%, including:

  1. Required courses (six):
    AFM 131
    ECON 101
    ENGL 109 or any ENGL 210
    MSCI 211 or PSYCH 338
    PHIL 215
    A course in statistics (available in several departments)
  2. Elective courses (select four from the following list):
    AFM 101 or 123
    CS 100
    ECON 102
    ECON 220
    HRM 200 or PSYCH 339
    MSCI 311 or SOC 232
    PHIL 145 or 216 
    SOC 241 or 243
    A business language course

(Students should check for course prerequisites)

Notes

  1. The Management Studies Minor, Option, or Diploma, is not available to students currently enrolled in or who have graduated from university business programs, plans, or subplans, including UW "X and Business" academic plans.
  2. A maximum of two courses may be double-counted between the Management Studies Minor, Option, or Diploma, and any other plan.
  3. Students in academic plans in Human Resources Management are precluded from taking Management Studies plans.
