French Studies/Études Françaises - Overview

The Department of French Studies offers academic plans in French Studies.

Three-Year General French

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative French major average of 65%.

Eligibility for graduation in the General French Academic Plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. French Studies Plan-level requirements:
    • at least six academic course units (12 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

Four-Year General French

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative French major average of 65%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Four-Year General French academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. French Studies Plan-Level requirements:
    • at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

Honours French

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative French major average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours French academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. French Studies Plan-level requirements:
    • at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • one of FR 192A, 192B
      • FR 197297
      • one of FR 263, 276
      • ten courses at the 300- or 400-level, of which at least four courses must be in language and four courses in literature or cultural studies

Honours French (Arts and Business Co-op and Regular)

Students may combine an Honours French academic plan with Arts and Business. The requirements in French are identical to the Joint Honours requirements listed below except that the total number of academic course units is 20. See Arts and Business for the Arts and Business requirements.

Honours French - French Teaching Specialization 

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 70% and a cumulative French major average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Honours French - French Teaching Specialization academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate BA Program-level requirements. See "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. French Studies Plan-level requirements:
    • at least ten academic course units (20 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • one of FR 192A, 192B
      • FR 197297
      • one of FR 263, 276
      • four courses in language at the 300- or 400-levels
      • one course in French linguistics (from FR 303, 403, 409)
      • five courses at the 300- or 400-levels, of which four courses must be in literature or cultural studies
      • Students who do not already have native fluency in French are required to spend two terms (normally in Year Three) at a French-speaking university.
        1. Students opting to study in France must include FR 473 in their plan.
        2. Students will be required to take PSYCH 212 (Educational Psychology) for which PSYCH 101 or 121R are prerequisites, and SOC 207 (Sociology of Education) for which SOC 101 or 120R are prerequisites. The remaining education courses of the plan are offered by Nipissing University.

Students graduate with an Honours BA degree from the University of Waterloo, a Bachelor of Education degree awarded by Nipissing University, and are eligible to receive certification from the Ontario College of Teachers to teach French at the primary-junior level.

Year Three
Except in the case of exempted Francophone students, this year is spent at a French-speaking university in France or in Quebec. Students should take the equivalent of: FR 351, 352, one linguistics course (from FR 303, 403, 409), one academic course unit in the second teachable subject, and other subject electives. Total academic course units completed this year should be five. The courses chosen should be approved by the Department of French Studies and by other departments in which discipline courses are taken.

Notes for French Teaching Specialization

  1. Students who do not already have native fluency in French are required to spend two terms (normally in Year Three) at a French-speaking university.
  2. Students are required to complete a total of 160 hours of in-school volunteer experience under supervision of qualified teachers, from Year Two to Year Four, inclusively.
  3. This is a joint consecutive BA/BEd program. Students must complete all requirements prior to graduating at the end of Year Five.

Joint Honours French

A Joint Honours academic plan with French Studies may be taken in combination with most Arts disciplines in which an Honours academic plan is offered or with many Honours majors in other Faculties. See the Department for the most recent list of approved combinations.

Continuation in this academic plan requires a cumulative overall average of 60% and a cumulative French major average of 75%.

Eligibility for graduation in the Joint Honours French academic plan includes successful fulfilment of the following requirements:

  1. Appropriate Program-level requirements for the Home Faculty, including at least 21 academic course units. If the Home Faculty is Arts, see "BA Degree Requirements."
  2. French Studies Plan-level requirements:
    • at least eight academic course units (16 courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 75%, including:
      • one of FR 192A, 192B
      • FR 197, 297
      • one of FR 263, 276
      • four courses in language at the 300- or 400-levels
      • three additional courses at the 300- or 400-levels in literature or cultural studies
  3. Plan-level requirements for the second Major

French Minor 

The French Minor requires successful completion of a minimum of five academic course units (ten courses) in French Studies with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including:

The following may not be counted as French courses towards a French Minor: FR 198, 199, 291, and 292.

Notes for All French Plans

  1. Students who wish to major or honour in French are strongly urged to take an appropriate first-year level French language course in addition to FR  197

Third-Year in France and Quebec

The Department of French Studies offers three different avenues to meet the requirement to spend two terms in a French-speaking university. Students may either apply for admission to the Université de Nantes (France) program, organized jointly by the University of Waterloo, Trent University and the University of Toronto, or elect to spend two terms at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi through a Letter of Permission. A third option is also possible: to study at the Université de Paris under the MICEFA program agreement. Application deadline is the third week in November for studies beginning the following academic year. Please see the Department of French Studies for application forms and information.

Certificates in French

Two certificates are offered: French Language I and French Language II. Students must successfully complete 2.5 academic course units (five courses) with a cumulative average of 70% as follows:

French Language I
FR 151, 152, 192A, 192B and one other course taught in French

French Language II
FR 192A, 192B, 251, 252 and one other course taught in French above the FR 152 level

Students who have completed these courses may apply in writing to the Chair of the Department of French Studies for the appropriate certificate. Please note that certificates I and II are mutually exclusive. Only one certificate can be granted.
