Grades Marks in individual courses will be reported as numerical marks on the scale 0 to 100. A mark of 50 or better is necessary to pass and receive credit for a course.
Conditional Standing
A student who marginally fails to meet the required standards of any Academic Plan will be placed in conditional standing for one term only. During this period the student must regain standing in that Plan or will subsequently be withdrawn from it.
Failed – Required to Withdraw
A student will normally be Failed – Required to Withdraw from the Faculty of Science after failing 1.5 units in any academic term or five cumulative units, or after failing to achieve an overall cumulative average of at least 55% and a cumulative average of 55% in all Science courses, or if unlikely to profit from further study, in the opinion of the Examination and Standings Committee.
Students who have been "Required to Withdraw" from the Faculty of Science must withdraw for at least two academic terms.
A formal application for re-admission should be submitted to the Science Undergraduate Office two months prior to your requested term of re-admission. Applicants must include an electronically printed statement along with their application outlining why they are now likely to succeed.
Re-admission when granted will be with conditional standing.
Students will be readmitted into General Science and must maintain a 55% cumulative GPA and a 55% Science average. This is based on a minimum of five lecture courses that must be taken in a maximum of two terms. These students will do a minimum of two approved Science lecture courses, plus any related labs where applicable, each term. If these conditions are met the conditional standing will be removed. Anyone not meeting the conditions will be Failed Required to Withdraw – May Not Be Readmitted to Faculty.
Terminology
AEG aegrotat – signifies the student's work or examination was incomplete because of illness and the instructor is satisfied that the student should receive credit for the course but a numerical mark could not be set. Credit granted but no mark in average.
CR – Credit granted where performance was satisfactory but no specific mark is given and AEG is not appropriate. Will not count in the cumulative averages.
DNW – Final examination not written in a course that has not been dropped officially whether the course has been attended or not. Unless a DNW grade is replaced by an INC or AEG grade for medical or extenuating circumstances it will be weighted for averaging purposes as a mark of 32 in determining standing.
FTC (Failure to complete "INC" coursework – no credit granted) – The average calculation value for FTC is 32.
INC (either term work, lab work, examination, etc., are incomplete) – A course for which the grade designation INC has been given must be completed within two terms of taking the course or the INC automatically becomes a mark of FTC. If a graduating student has an INC, it will be recorded as FTC on the transcript. Students should not re-enrol in an INC course. They should see the instructor to arrange completion of the course.
NCR – Credit is not granted where performance was unsatisfactory but no specific mark is given – failure reported.
NMR – No mark recorded will count as a failure and will be weighted for averaging purposes as a mark of 32.
IP – Course in progress, no grade assigned at this time and no credit granted.
UR – Grade under review, decision pending.
WD – (withdrew after the course drop deadline) has no effect on average or credit calculations.
WF – (withdrew/failure) is assigned for courses dropped after week eight. WF will be weighted for averaging purposes as a mark of 32.
"Attempt" is a course completed, whether passed or failed, or recorded as INC or DNW. Courses dropped before the official deadline are not considered as attempts and do not appear on the transcript.
Course
A course may refer to a lecture course, a laboratory course, or a lecture-laboratory course which includes both lecture and laboratory.
Most laboratory courses are designated by the letter L following the course number.
Unit
Unit weights are assigned for lecture and laboratory courses as designated in the course descriptions. Courses are given unit weights which vary from 0.25 to 1.00 credit or more. Most courses have a 0.50 unit weight and are of one-term duration.
Course unit weights are used to calculate weighted averages. Unit weights are also used in calculating tuition fees. Part-time students especially should be aware of this fact when choosing courses.
