East Asian Studies

East Asian Studies - Overview

East Asia exerts a significant influence on world dynamics. Renison's Diploma in East Asian Studies provides students with an opportunity to enhance their understanding of the cultures and languages of China, Japan and Korea through an organized program of study.

The Diploma will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of five academic course units (ten courses) with a minimum cumulative average of 65%. The courses are as follows:

  1. Five required courses:
    • EASIA 201R East Asian Culture
    • Four East Asian language courses as follows:
      • Two 100-level and two 200-level courses from any one of CHINA, JAPAN or KOREA, or
      • Two 100-level courses from any two of CHINA, JAPAN or KOREA
  2. Three optional courses from the following:
      EASIA 205R/RS 210 Religion in East Asia
      EASIA 210R Chinese Literature in Translation
      EASIA 220R/HIST 231R The History of East Asian Communities in Canada
      EASIA 250R Study Abroad in East Asia
      EASIA 300R Politics and Diplomacy of Contemporary Japan
      EASIA 375R Studies in East Asia
      GEOG 212 Japan and the Pacific Rim
      HIST 239 History of Modern China
      HIST 351 Canada: The Immigrant Experience
      PSCI 358 Political Change in Greater China
      PSCI 359 Government and Politics of Asia
      PSCI 383 International Politics of Asia-Pacific, 1945 - Present
      RS 100A Religions of the East
      RS 214 Buddhism
      RS 215 Buddhism in Tibet
      RS 333 East Comes West, West Turns East
      SOC 250 Contemporary Japanese Society
  3. Two further courses from any of those listed above. JAPAN 301R may also be used. Other courses may be considered with the approval of the Director.

Notes

  1. Students will receive consideration for equivalent credit for up to three similar university-level credit courses.
  2. Diplomas are normally mailed out following Convocation. Students should make their request for the diploma in writing to the Renison Registrar's Office (ren-reg@renison.uwaterloo.ca) by March 1st for Spring Convocation and by July 1st for Fall Convocation.
  3. All attempts to complete courses for the diploma will be included in the overall average calculations.
  4. The Peter Swann Achievement Award in East Asian Studies is granted annually by Renison to an outstanding student who has completed at least six of the ten required courses for the Diploma in East Asian Studies.
