Conrad Grebel University College (CGUC) is an academic and residential college at the University of Waterloo. The College is owned by the Mennonite Church Eastern Canada (MCEC), which is a constituent member of the Mennonite Church of Canada. The College was incorporated by letters patent on April 20, 1961 and was affiliated with the University of Waterloo on December 15, 1961. The College offers the Music and the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) programs leading to University of Waterloo BA degrees. The College also offers undergraduate courses in a variety of disciplines in the Faculty of Arts, especially in History, Mennonite Studies, Religious Studies, English, Sociology, Philosophy and Arts. Although affiliated with the University of Waterloo, the College maintained an independent authority to grant degrees in theology including the following degrees: Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Christian Studies, Master of Religious Education, Master of Theology, Master of Sacred Music, Doctor of Theology, Doctor of Ministry, and the honorary Doctorate of Divinity. The College established the Graduate Theological Studies program in 1987, offering the Master of Theological Studies (MTS) degree. As of Spring 2007, the College discontinued offering an independent master’s degree and now offers a Master of Theological Studies degree conjointly with the University of Waterloo. This conjoint degree is offered within the framework established by the “Theological Studies” agreement dated December 18, 2006, between the University of Waterloo, St. Jerome’s University, and Conrad Grebel University College.
Master of Theological Studies (MTS)
The master’s program in Theological Studies (TS) is a new program at the University of Waterloo (Spring 2007), but it is based on the twenty years of experience that Conrad Grebel University College (CGUC) has in providing master’s education in theological studies.
Three options of study are available:
- Thesis Option, will prepare students for further graduate studies in theology. It will involve coursework, research and culminate in a thesis.
- Applied Studies Option, will be for students involved in or preparing for the practice of ministry. It will involve coursework, internships in ministry, and a capstone integrative project.
- Coursework Option, will provide students with a broad understanding of theological disciplines. It will consist of coursework and a research paper.
Program Objectives
The objective of the program is to provide graduate theological education in the study of Christianity from an Anabaptist-Mennonite perspective in an interdisciplinary, ecumenical and inter-religious setting. Theological Studies is a two-year graduate degree program in the academic study of Bible, theology, and the practice of ministry. The MTS is intended to prepare students for advanced graduate studies in theology, for careers and service in ministry, and for a broad understanding of the theological disciplines.
